Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders. Review: Great for fans of Glass & General Technique - Great book containing Glass' etudes. Great for nailing techniques. The scores might appear very repetitive on the pages, but that's the essence of glass' work. The result is having to identify the points of change. Good quality book, opens and stay put with a little bit of force to be able to read whilst playing. Recommended. Review: Beautiful edition. - I began to dabble in several of the preludes and the edition is clean and easy to read. I really like these preludes that join a long tradition which has seen many great composers meet this kind of compositional challenge. Glass' preludes are deceitfully simple, but in reality they will expose the frailties of any pianist that approaches them unthinkingly.

For those who want to do more than listen ...
I listened to his etudes on YouTube, and decided I had to learn to play some of them. Delighted to find them all together in one book. Some are much easier than others, suitable for intermediate player level upwards. I've started on the simplest and there are plenty to challenge me over the years. My hands are learning new skills, my brain new rhythms. I'll never be a Maki Namekawa, and I may never be able to play them all, but it matters not - I'm having great fun getting my fingers round the ones I've tried. Very glad that he has released the book. I expect the book to last well, to last my lifetime.

No frills piano music book
Philip Glass has been known to be reticent about making his music available, however this book was published at about the same time that the music was first performed which is great. Some basic details: This music book is slightly larger than A4 size. The binding includes stitching which should help to keep the pages in place, and the pages remain open. The book contains the music, but nothing extra apart from a brief introduction by Philip Glass in which he provides the reason he composed the Etudes. If you would like to analyse the music of Philip Glass, I recommend "Philip Glass : First Classics : 1968-1969" as this has a significant amount of background information and further references.

loving it
First impression is; a very good production. Unlike some publications, the notes are easily read, the pages are easily turned during playing and different parts are nicely marked which makes practicing easier.

Wrong paper
A small quibble: I bought this having been borrowing an identical copy from a friend. This copy is identical EXCEPT for the paper which is thinner and pure white rather than the cream heavier weight paper on the copy I was borrowing. Possibly because of this it’s much more difficult to keep it open at one place. Had I realised this difference earlier I would have attempted an exchange . Otherwise v happy with it

The etudes of Glass are not the most difficult to play and can be learnt fairly easily and quickly. This edition presents the complete etudes and I love the fact that I have book 1 and book 2 in the same edition so that I do not have to carry that much around. Good print and the paper is nice and thick so I am very satisiffed with the quality in general!

BEFORE I discovered Philip Glass and this glorious book of etudes, I'd played piano very casually for 10 years or so (never played consistently and never took lessons). I was in band and always had a strong interest in music, so I was pretty good at picking out melodies by ear and playing simple chords underneath. The problem was that any time I tried to sit down and learn a piece of notated music, I'd just get overwhelmed by all the different moving parts and give up. Always had this feeling that the bar of entry into classical piano literature was too high, like I'd missed out on years of requisite fundamentals so it was pointless to try. Needless to say, I hardly improved over those years. SINCE discovering Philip Glass and this glorious book of etudes, I'm playing piano for literal hours every day just for the joy of it. I feel myself actually developing those techniques I previously thought I'd missed out on. I've honestly fallen in love with the piano. The music itself is sprawling and always interesting, and clearly the work of a genius. What I'd like to highlight is how USER-FRIENDLY these compositions are. Every note is placed in a way that feels comfortable and intuitive. This makes it easy to memorize these pieces and go into a sort of trance as you notice all these details in the harmony that aren't apparent on early listens. It is so incredibly satisfying to play these etudes, and people love to hear them. If you are even slightly decent at piano and want something to push you forward, GET THIS COLLECTION. If you are an advanced pianist, STILL GET THIS COLLECTION because it's full of incredible music that would fit into any repertoire. Some of my personal favorites to play: 2, 5, 9, 10, 14, 17 I'll also add: this book is constructed immaculately. Huge pages, intuitively printed to avoid awkward turns, it actually sits flat no matter what pages are opened. This was clearly designed with respect for the consumer.
