BABYLON

Don't quit too early...it took me two times to understand and love it.
I'm already kinda like that, stuff can get by me uncensored, uncritiqued, at least for myself. The first time I saw this film I was actually "double tasking" on another project (which i know isn't good to do, doesn't make me more 'efficient' despite my ignorance to think otherwise!), so I missed too many of the rapid-fire action scenes. I liked it overall when it ended but I just saw Babylon again today for the 2nd time...and I realize now much more about what I didn't catch the first time and how it plays out in the storyline. Silly rabbit, right?!What didn't I like about the movie? Only thing is that the story is huge with many important (and hilarious) characters who all weave in and around the other characters, and none too slowly. So you need to keep up, listen and watch well. The clips throughout are faster than fast, with a meaning to each that will have you cracking up and surprised by such fun. (The music, by the way, is absolutely perfect in my opinion.) So I just needed to watch well-enough in the first 15 minutes before I was up to speed, so to speak. Wasn't hard, but neglecting this aspect during my first viewing proved to be very dumb! There are way too many aspects to promote in most any 3 hour movie. My attempts would only take up your time. Suffice it to say, however, that Brad, Margo and Diego are simply Stellar in Babylon. Each role is pure perfection I believe, while their acting work is supported by an incredibly huge and talented cast. I bet you'll watch and enjoy all the acting without thinking about how long the movie is running (duh, dude: why'd you have to mention the length at all?!). There is SO much to fall over laughing for the slapstick lines and scenes, then watch intensely as the actors' lives on screen collapse for doing what each of us would have probably done during the time of silent film start-ups that lead to the growth and entry of "talkies".One final point, if I may, has to do with the final 15-minutes or so of the movie. This part is simply outstanding movie making at its very best. A High-Bar for others to follow and compare, to be sure. We see Diego, now as an older Hispanic man with a family, in a modern movie theater as he watches "Singing in the Rain." This pokes him to remember how fine his life and love were decades earlier, so much so that he weeps terribly over what we can all see with him. Memorable and tragic, yet there's that understated grin from Diego at the movie's end. It was as if he came to see a bigger perspective that was a bit better for him. I'm probaly reaching here, but it appeared to help him move forward past what had happened to him tragically and show how he could enjoy his waning years.I'm telling you folks that I don't write many reviews, mostly to give a gently push to seek out a movie or avoid one. This film is different. Babylon moved me to send out this message to everyone: watch it closely and enjoy it immensely. If you don't get it, watch it again. I guarantee you'll become a big fan if you love movies. If you don't, well, maybe something's wrong with you.No worries though, just go watch it again.Peace.

If only Fellini were alive!
How do I hate this film, let me count the ways. There was no sense of the 1920s silent film era, unless seen through the politically correct lens of 2022. The music was wrong. The color film was wrong. It should have black and white. The acting was overly dramatic: the characters seemed like idiots, not people of excess whose talent comes with problematic psyches. No sympathy in these cartoon characters. Who cares about people who seem to relish bad behavior and almost deserve their fate? But there could have been some deeper look into these personalities; but that would make this film too serious and thoughtful. Its purpose was the shock and awe, which went flat compared to other films that really have something to say about the excesses of sex and drugs. It tries at the end to sentimentalize the movie industry--I HATED the fact that in the final montage they included a scene from an Ingmar Bergman film, which is REAL filmmaking, and pulled the rug from under Hollywood at the time, and I did not see any Fellini--yet it was an unsentimental journey, one focused on spectacle. And that is all this film is about: spectacle. Film is about more than just wild scenes, it's about feeling something about one's life. We go to the movies (went?) to be captivated by a life we could not or would not take for ourselves and in the confines of the church-like house, dark enough so we forget where we are and live inside the film. This film said nothing about that in a real way. If you want to see a film about the love of film, see Cinema Paradiso, the Italian version.

One long and messed up movie…..
Babylon is another Chazelle and Hurwitz collaboration (La La Land, Whiplash). They were Harvard roommates. Hurwitz’s score is outstanding and deserves an Oscar. The musicians who played it have to be great. I have not heard trumpet playing at this level since Miles Davis. Screenplay is horrible. There are at least four main characters. Margot Robbins is great in the beginning but like the movie burns out Hal way through. Pitt is Pitt. Diego Calva is probably the best actor in the movie. Like Babylon the movie is really X rated. We get the point from the first scene how decadent Hollywood was at this time. By the end, they take it to even a lower level when you think there is no lower level. This has to be one very expensive film which few will make money. When the Soundtrack comes out in April, buy it. The movie is worth the three plus hour watch just to say you saw it. It is NOT best picture, director or screenplay material. Cinematography maybe. Editing, no. A lot of this film could have been cut especially towards the end and so much of it could of been much better. I think Pitt was not the best choice for this film. He is distracting by his poor acting and I realize some of it is intentional but most of it is him. So many other actors could have made this plot line shine. Three stars. Best seen of the big screen and Dolby Atmos or better. Hurwitz you are great - future John Williams at the very least.

Excess And Squalor
Babylon is one of the oldest cities in the world, smug and confident enough to build a tower to reach Heaven only to have its construction halted by God and the people punished for their arrogance and excess. Babylon the movie shares a similar fate, like Icarus flying too close to the sun only to crash down from the weight of its own ambition. Babylon is a movie about the movies with elements from The Artist, Chaplin, and Citizen Cain. Visually stunning with exacting period detail and a soundtrack that evokes the era while driving the action. Babylon is an old time tale of Tinsel Town dreams, success, and failure that ultimately falls from a bloated run time and unfocused, wandering story that takes on a little too much. The ensemble cast is vast with many outstanding performances that blur together like a hard to remember dream. Nearly one of the greatest movies about the movies ever made it ultimately shares the fate of its fabled namesake: Babylon.

Maravillosa.

Over indulgent, but a fun watch
I love movies about making movies, so Babylon is made for me. It's baffling that this movie seems to have come and gone with so little notice or fanfare. It's definitely long, and, some can argue, too much in love with itself, but, if you've always been a movie lover, and enjoy period pieces about Hollywood, this is the movie for you. It's mostly funny, though it has its dramatic moments, and the usual use of Jazz in the Soundtrack, like Chazelle does in all of his movies, goes well with the subject matter. Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt are in top form here, and their charm and charisma carries you through the 190 minutes of this movie. Image and sound are top notch in the 4K, pity that the extras packages is nothing to write home about, a couple of featurettes and a nice collection of deleted scenes. If you love Whiplash and La La Land, this is a nice follow up to those movies.
