Q: is this a powder or a siringe ?

It is grain spawn; that is grain coated with the spores of the mushroom.

Q: where is growing instructions

You can find them by following the link on the spawn pack. Alternatively do a search on google for 'mushroombox instructions' and you will find the page with all of our instruction documents for most species of mushroom.

Q: I am assuming I have to make my own substrate for this. Can I grow them in a monotub ?

I could not manage to go grow any mushrooms so cannot be of much help

Q: Are these a one off grow or will they keep coming back if roots are left behind?

Mine didn't grow at all. They just arrived in a plastic bag with no growing instructions so perhaps I planted them wrong. But perhaps not.

Interesting if they grow

I was expecting the "box mushroom" in s box. Not 3 small packages with only the instructions of planting on line... don't know the flavour as I'm not successful yet. Hopeful but not holding my breath...

its not cheap --> read on

Bought this along with a PINK OYSTER MUSHROOM growing kit: Amazon loves to bundle stuff and recommends bundling 3 different spawns with the kit you buy: you would think that you will be able to grow 4 varieties at once. But no, you get the 1 growing kit only viable for 1 spawn of 1 type of mushroom for 1 time, so while you figure out what to do your 3 extra spawns are getting old. No instructions provided on the extra spawns you have to contact seller who then tells you that you can go download the instructions: like printing an extra 3 pages would have killed him. Charge 3 cents more and send the printed instructions. Now it is not cheap like they get you to believe, since you have to source a new substrate for the other spawns.Bottom line, unless you are experienced and have a substrate at home waiting for it DO NOT BUY.
