Action Picture Test: Revised Edition (The Renfrew Language Scales) Cards – Box set, 2 Nov. 2010

I bought this revised edition to replace the old version I've been using for years, because the pictures in the old version are so old-fashioned. The test itself is excellent and yields a lot of qualitative as well as quantitative information. However, I have only given it three stars because of the very weird pictures in this new version (if I were rating the pictures I'd have given it one star!) They are much less clear than the old version, and to be frank, they are very scary, all the people and animals depicted having the most freaky goggly eyes. The stuff of nightmares! Apparently the new pictures have been "trialled", but the instruction booklet doesn't indicate whether or not the test has been re-standardised. Not impressed at all. I'll continue using the old version.

As expected, well known and popular screen, was definitely due an update. Looks good, excellent service.

I've just used this in a professional context with Key Stage 1 children. It was simple to carry out. When conducting the test it does require exact recording of the spoken sentences which can be difficult if the participant speaks quite fast!There is guidance on how to score the test but it did require me to think carefully when marking. The results do give you a information and grammar score which identifies the gaps so that an appropriate intervention can be put into place. It can be carried out again which would help to measure progress. As a school resource I think this would be useful as a starting point.
