When I, for political and religious reasons, left Austria in 1938 and went to school in England, Shakespeare was an insurmountable hurdle. I was made to study 'Macbeth' for the School Certificate and, although I understood very little, I managed to pass the English exam. Now, at the age of 90, I was able to enjoy the translation into modern English.
