Hilariously funny blend of laddish bad behaviour, sci-fi, and shadowy secret governement agencies.
The underlying premise of this book is utterly preposterous: strange life-forms from a distant planet come to earth and occupy human host bodies in order to pursue their love of the earthly game of football. Meanwhile shadowy, secret government agencies seek to track these aliens down. It really shouldn't work, but weirdly it does! This success stems, largely, from the author's brilliantly engaging comic writing style which really did have me inwardly chuckling throughout, even though there were some dark moments in the book as well. The portrayal of the antics of the house-sharing lads Macko, Gerry, and Chubb is just hilarious. There were just two things which, for me, took the edge off an otherwise brilliant book were. Firstly, the author frequently and freely mixes 'points of view' of various characters within a single scene. It's perhaps a technical point, and many readers may not even notice it, but as an author myself, I was constantly aware of it, and it grated a little. Secondly there were quite a number of typos - by no means as many as in some books I've read but enough to detract slightly from the flow of the book.Overall, though, a brilliantly funny and very original book. Recommended.

Relaxing in a man's way
This book will not change your life, nor will it win the Booker prize....However if, like me, you want a book to while away a relaxing hour or two - something with an interesting storyline that will cajole you into reading the next chapter and then the next - then this could be a good buy.The main characters are brought to life really well, making you feel you've come across them somewhere before. The narrative is written in a slightly conversational style, making the quips and observations of the author fit well in the story. The story itself does its level best to blend the worlds of Torchwood, football and lads mags together with humour, and does it in such a way that it's worth reading.

Unusual, intriguing, surprising, surreal!
I had reservations with the opening chapter, but as the book progresses I found myself drawn in and getting increasingly involved with the characters who mature with the story. It's an unusual take on science-fiction, romance, intrigue and football (something for everyone!)that somehow weaves together to create a gripping read. The characters are varied and well-drawn; from the crass and crude Macko, to the sensitive and soulful Ellis. The plot twists and turns, keeping the reader guessing and curious to find out more. I think the key to it's enjoyment for me was I found myself genuinely caring what happened to this crazy bunch in their surreal but surprisingly believable lives!

Cross between The Young Ones and X files
A quirky and well written novel that will amuse anyone into football and aliens. You don't need to be a fan of Elvis but that wouldn't go a miss too. Definitely not a book for children it contains colourful language. A cross between The Young Ones and X-files, we delve into the murky world of secret agents and body-hopping aliens who happen to be obsessed by football. I loved it

Laddish Comedy meets with Alien Sci-Fi
This book had me in stitches from the very first chapter - amazing, considering I probably wouldn’t have given it a second glance if it hadn’t been recommended, since I am neither a football fan or an Elvis fan - but I am so glad I read it!First impression of Macko and Gerry: they reminded me of the characters in the TV series ‘Men Behaving Badly,’ a pair of young academics whose lives revolve around beer, football and trying to score with the opposite sex. The author paints a rich canvas, the language ripe but the banter is very comical. This however, is not your usual run of the mill ‘Laddish Comedy’ (far from it). The story that unravels turns out to be an amazingly sophisticated and complex sci-fi drama. It is a little like ‘Men in Black’ but with some unexpected twists. The alien life forms appear to take on a human host as their life essence fades and all the while attempting to evade a sinister secret agency, designed to control alien intervention on earth. The strangest concept is that this particular ‘life form’ has developed a passion for football - hence their reluctance to leave earth and return to their own world - oh, and one of the ‘hosts’ just happens to be Elvis Presley (the one and only) leading to an exciting but hilarious ending.I give five stars to any book which makes me laugh, as this one did frequently. Very entertaining!
