A touching and valuable tribute to the voice
The voice of Whitney Houston still communicates easily to listeners more than 10 years later (Has it really been that long?) and that is fully illustrated on this collection of Gospel tunes. Those who know anything about Nippy knows she was raised in the church. Her mother is Cissy Houston, so that was inevitable, but Whitney's success on the charts and what she means to her millions of fans was all her own. Her music touched us and she will forever be remembered as a singer whose unparalleled voice brought music lovers joy. She was and is still a legendary force. She was "the voice". In 1985 Whitney made her debut and was heralded the world over as one of the most talented singers to emerge in recent memory. She sold millions of records, making her one of the most successful of singers. That is why her downward spiral was so surprising. She seemed to have it all. Her 2012 death made the demand her material more pressing, so the record companies cashed in with a new compilation of her greatest hits and then a CD of outtakes and live performances of singles from the Bodyguard soundtrack album. I couldn't help but notice Arista struggling to find new material from Whitney to release. It's easy to think of this as a cash grab and in a sense, it is, but it's still nice to have all these recordings presented here. U can tell her family really wanted the world to hear this and now that I've heard it, I'm glad they fought hard to release it. It truly is beautiful. This is a retrospective in the truest sense. Whitney didn't leave many recordings in the vault apparently, so it's only natural that this scrapes the bottom of the barrel. You have to remember that these recordings weren't designed to be released on a large scale. Whitney --and her family-- probably never thought they would see release on a wide scale and as huge a platform with as much attention as its gotten. The recordings were recorded in 1981, some 4 years before her debut and they've been meticulously remastered and cleaned up. The new recordings are good. Whitney sounds more invested in them than she does on some of her biggest hits and u can tell Whitney loved her Gospel. Still, I think Whitney was a better pop singer than gospel singer. Her vocals on her pop recordings from 1985 feel more natural to her voice and her runs distract from the message of the music, which is paramount in Gospel music. It may not be the holy grail of finds, but The Gospel of Whitney Houston is a nice addition to her discography and shows that even before her history changing hits, Whitney was a once in a lifetime talent. This is a great little gem, even if it stretches her vault material to the abyss. 4/5 stars. Recommended.

Inspiring Whitney
I love listening to Whitney Houston sing gospel and I still play CDs in my car so this was perfect for me. It’s a great compilation of music and included a few songs I’d never heard before.

God's anointed angel
If you love Whitney you knew she loved Jesus!!! "Celebrate" with her. I wish they had included Testimony just Whitney's version, I Didn't Know My Own Strength, You Were Loved, and ended it with Don't Cry For Me (acapella). However its a smooth ride. I love the album my very own Whitney gospel CD.

'I Go To The Rock' (with The Georgia Mass Choir) is lovely and both Whitney's and the choir's vocals were superb! 'Jesus Loves Me' is another lovely Gospel song and Whitney sings the song beautifully; 'He Can Use Me' (Previously Unreleased) is a nice song with nice vocals; 'Joy To The World' (with The Georgia Mass Choir) is very lovely with lovely vocals; 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' (Live VH1 Honors-June 22, 1995) (Previously Unreleased) is 'okay' (I found fellow Gospel singer CeCe Winans' vocals to be overpowering Whitney's vocals)! It's a beautiful song first recorded by Simon and Garfunkel and the late Queen of Soul singer Aretha Franklin covered the song beautifully; 'Testimony' (Previously Unreleased) is a good song that is upbeat and the song got me moving! 'I Look To You' is a lovely song with lovely piano and Whitney's vocals; 'His Eye Is On The Sparrow' is nice as well as 'Hold On, Help Is On The Way' (with The Georgia Mass Choir); 'This Day' (Live VH1 Honors-June 22, 1995) (Previously Unreleased) is nice as well as 'I Found A Wonderful Way' (Previously Unreleased); 'Joy' (with The Georgia Mass Choir) is another nice song as well as 'I Love The Lord' (with The Georgia Mass Choir); 'He/I Believe' (Live at Yokohama Arena-January 2, 1990) (Previously Unreleased) is very nice. WOW!!! Whitney Houston could sing! She truly was 'the voice' of her generation and when Whitney sang Gospel songs it's as though the good Lord blessed her with a beautiful voice so rare that not even Beyonce can touch her! Whitney should've stayed with Gospel and who knows what would've happened if she were alive today? No one will ever know! REST IN POWER to singer/songwriter/actress/model Ms. Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963-February 11, 2012): 'You may be gone but you will never, ever be, forgotten.'

New unreleased vocals & live performances I’ve longed to have on record. This is more like it and a better direction for a posthumous album release. I was surprised that the unreleased vocals included such a young Whitney, which I found to be a nice insight into her vocal journey. (Although, I always do wonder about artist approval when it comes to unreleased vocals.) My only criticisms are the artwork & the vocal editing on some of the older vocals. Unfortunately, I find the artwork is very poorly executed. I can see the picture has been badly chopped out & slapped onto this background - Not the strongest cover. I personally expect a better finish for a Legendary artist such as Whitney; especially because she has an extensive photo collection to choose from. It feels as though the Whitney estate are rushing things out with no quality control checks, which isn’t in keeping with the level of quality Whitney held throughout her career. It would’ve been nice to have included “A Quiet Place” in this collection. Quite possibly one of her greatest & most moving Gospel performances. I was also slyly hoping for something unreleased from The Preachers Wife soundtrack, but Whitney’s approval should of course be prioritised. With all that said, Whitney’s vocals will always be much more than a five star review and this collection is a warm Whitney vocal embrace bringing us closer to God - something I believe was her ultimate mission in life.
