Very Good Quality Ground Allspice
Allspice is one of those spices that I use a lot, especially in spice biscuits, cakes and pies. It also works fab in some squash/gourd based soups I make. But the spice has to be fresh tasting, if not then it gives the food a bitter taste. Well, I am happy to say this one definitely tastes fresh! It is very good quality spice, so I am happy with this ground allspice.

Great allspice
Allspice is a staple in Caribbean cooking and it makes sense to buy some nice quality organic pimento. This is GMO-free, nicely priced and the packaging is fully recyclable. Nice!

Cinnamon, nutmeg and clove
The name ‘allspice’ most be one of the most confusing names in anyone’s kitchen. It isn’t a mixture, but a spice in its own right. The name derives from it being considered to combine the flavours of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove.Whole, dried berries are available, but this pack contains the finely ground product. The smell and taste are both suggestive of the three other spices.I tend to use allspice as a lazy way of adding the flavours of the other three spices, or, in the case of mulled wine, along with those three, plus ginger. The Wholefood Earth label suggests a wide range of uses, from sweet to savoury. The ‘Best Before’ date on the sample I received is January 2025, so about 19 months ahead of when it was delivered. ‘Origin: Guatemala’.It comes in an all-plastic pouch that Wholefood Earth says is ‘Eco-friendly and fully recyclable’. It doesn’t say so, but is – I think – a candidate for the ‘Soft plastic’ skip at a supermarket, rather than the box of harder plastics collected from home. The label is paper and can readily be peeled off for recycling (from home) with other paper. The best part of the packaging may be that it has a built-in reseal strip towards the top. I don’t always get on with those – sometimes end up cutting them off sticky things like dried figs – but this one works well. Additionally, the pack stands upright on its own base, looks good, and even feels nice. So, good in every way.

Wonderful smell, evocative of Christmas.
I am becoming an advocate for Whole Food Earth who produce wonderful herbs and spices in re-sealable pouches that are totally recyclable and can trace the source of their organic and GMO free products back to their origins. This 50 gram pack of Allspice has the most wonderful aroma and instantly makes me think of Christmas, from mulled wine to Christmas cakes. This pack has a best before date of October 2024, but I suspect the 50 grams will be gone long before then. Although allspice is made from a single berry the smell is similar to a mixture of nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon and can be used in year round savoury dishes as well as seasonal ones. There are cheaper products available in the supermarkets but I don't see them assuring you that their products are GMO free, organic or traceable, therefore I would recommend you try this superior version.
