The Wit and Wisdom of Downton Abbey

This is a lovely little book. Little being the operative word, it is like a "pocket book". I bought this as a gift which was very well received and has beautiful pictures inside as well as extracts from the scrips. There are lots of laughs if you were a fan of the show, most of it at the expense of the Dowager Countess!

Brilliant little book. Brought back so many memories reading the quotes. And the illustrations are lovely. Really recommend this book for all the other Downton fans out there

This mini-book of 128 pages is highly amusing and is a great companion to the Downton Abbey series. It contains some of the best and most memorable quotations and anecdotes from the show, and has well produced colour photographs of the leading characters. After an introduction from Jessica Fellowes, the book is divided into five chapters. First, "Life" contains a classic from Carson "If you're tired of style, you are tired of life", and from Branson "We all live in a harsh world. But at least I know I do." A killer line from Mary is "Families like ours are always hunting families". Next, "Love and Family" has a wonderful quotation from Violet "I am not a romantic. But even I will concede that the heart does not exist solely for the purpose of pumping blood". And, Mrs Patmore advises Daisy "Sometimes you can spend too long on a one-sided love". In addition, Robert and Violet discuss Mary. Robert says "She is broken and bruised and it is our job to wrap her up and keep her safe from the world". Violet replies "No, Robert. It is our job to bring her back into the world". In "Work" Isobel tells Cora "Of course, it would be foolish to accuse you of being unprofessional, since you've never had a profession in your life". In a revealing dialogue, Edith says "Listen, everyone. You have a journalist in the family". Violet replies "Since we have a country solicitor and a car mechanic, it was only a matter of time". And, Carson says "I am not dressing a chauffeur". In "Play", Robert says "They do say there's a wild man inside all of us." Violet replies "If only he would stay inside". And again from Violet "I don't dislike him. I just don't like him, which is quite different." A wonderful line from Cora is when she tells Robert "Don't worry about me. I'm an American. Have gun, will travel". In the final chapter of "Donwton Abbey" Martha says "Come war and peace, Downton still stands and the Crawleys are still in it". Violet amusingly says "It's like living in a second-rate hotel where the guests keep arriving and no one seems to leave". And in one of the best lines from the series, Isobel asks Violet what they should call each other, and Violet replies "We could always start with Mrs Crawley and Lady Grantham". In truth, an entire book could be filled with the best quotations from Maggie Smith's Violet character - it is the Maggie Smith show! Simply reading her script would be incredibly amusing and memorable. But this book covers all of the characters, and is a must-buy for any Downton Abbey aficionado.

If you loved Downton Abbey this is all the most gloriously clever, funny and poignant bits collected in one place . A smile on every page !

If you are a downtown ran, and now as the series has come to an end. This will combat withdrawal symptoms. I must admit I have not read it cover to cover, by what I have read is first class. Plenty of one liners, I can actually hear the characters actually saying them. Certainly a lovely book for any downtown fan.

A fab book of wit and wisdom. A treasure to keep in memory of Downton and the absolute genius of it's author Julian Fellowes.!

I consider it an excellent selection out of an incredible series. Looking at the series, you don't always get the wisdom or irony of these utterings while being distracted by something else. With the help of this booklet, you can really enjoy all that - ponder it or laugh about it. All in all: a wonderful idea!

It's a great collection of great quotes. A must read, a ready reckoner, something that could make you laugh, cry and nostalgic about the brilliant show.

I enjoyed reading these selections of dialogue and happy times remembering the various episodes. Laughed till I cried at some of them.

Sei es die Dowager Countess, Mrs Patmore oder der Earl of Grantham persönlich, alle Downton Charaktere haben einige gute Sprüche und Weisheiten in der Serie zum Besten gegeben. Ich habe sogar beim Schauen schon angefangen mir gute Sprüche aufzuschreiben, was ich jetzt nicht mehr machen muss, da dieses Buch zu allen Lebenslagen Sprüche bereithält. Dieses Büchlein gehört definitv ins Regal eines jeden Downton Abbey Fans!

Es un libro pequeño y con buenas frases de la serie lo único que no me gustó es el papel del libro, es como de revista y lo imaginaba de otro material.
