It can also mean (and I think what the developer means by it) - "Even and Smooth". There are not many cars these days that have the former, so the latter prevails in this meaning of flat. It is also shown in the photographs as not to be on a horizontal surface so again the latter prevails. Also with 6 strong magnets this is not going to slip off to easy either.I found this to be the best magnetic product that I have come across and the uses are endless not just for mobile phones as as long as you can attach a small metal plate to anything that you dont wont sliding around your dash then this is also for you. I have modified an E Cig with a small metal plate and use the magnetic pad to hold it and vice versa when I am using my phone for navigation purposes. Mobile phone usage is banned in cars so best to put the holder to some use.All in all its a quality piece of kit, size of a matchbox and has been designed with quality in mind. Halfords do a similar product, costs more and the magnets are tiny yet the box they supply it in is massive! I dont normally write reviews unless I am totally p@@d off or am so impressed that others should know about it. Try it for yourself and if it doesnt work for you the magnets will come in handy for something that's for sure. Win, win...

Strong magnet but my dash is slightly curved, and the top and bottom of the 3M adhesive pad will not stick to the surface. I can see this won't stick to my dash for long especially with the force you have to put in to remove your phone from the magnets. looks sleek though. blends in well with the car.
