The Shadow knows...
A take on the pulp radio series of the 1930's that is surprisingly good with solid performances and effects. Worth watching.

UK COLLECTOR'S EDITION! I know what extras lurk in the heart of this release...
After MUCH research that proved fruitless, I ended up purchasing this blu-ray/DVD blindly, in the desperate hope… it had the new interviews with cast and crew which featured on its US equivalent. Aaaaaaand, despite it hardly screaming its bonus features on the back cover - IT DOES! YAY! It runs some 23 mins, plus photo gallery and trailer. Interestingly, the trailer boasts some blink-and-you'll miss-'em scenes not featured in the movie; most notably, the Shadow in full outfit sitting at communications device in the Sanctum. Gotta hand it to this release - they've EVEN put the extras on the DVD disc, thus, sparing your frustration if you don't own a blu-ray player. Wanting my cake and eat it, it would have been nice if this release also featured the back-in-the-day making of extras and music video of the German blu-ray, but, well, maybe we have one final release to look forward to…THE SHADOW: ULTIMATE EDITION! HA!Or, maybe even…HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! This is a movie that came out before all the ...
This is a movie that came out before all the Marvel Comics films with special effects and CGI, which create the visually overpowering moves of superheroes that abound now. Back at the time of this film, Hollywood was still trying to determine the right formula for a comic book mega-hit. Even the era this movie portrays is from the forties, and it might be said the earliest incantations of the superheroes that we know of today. To me, what this film has going for it is style and nostalgia, or whatever that is so enthralling of that time period. I am something of a style over substance kind of guy in that rewatching films seems always to be a matter of nostalgia. They represent the context of times in your past when you first saw the film. So style is important in making the visit appreciable, since you know what is going to happen.

A Shadow of What it Could Be
A famous long-dormant character of the 1930s gets a 1990s update, primarily fitting in the mold of other crime-fighting superhero efforts like Batman, the look of this film reminded me very much of Tim Burtons Batman, Through it's dark moods and it's sweeping vistas of a very Gotham-esque New York. The Shadow was apparently primarily popular through radio programs, as well as in pulpy novels, comics from various publishers, a few films, and on television to a lesser extent. The problem with this film is that we never really feel like there's more to know about the mysterious figure that we aren't already introduced to, primarily because the film itself never seems particularly deep enough to handle a richer characterization. If all you're looking for is a diversion, I suppose you could do worse than The Shadow. Of course, these days, you could do a great deal better, as once you scratch the one-layer surface of this film's visual appeal, you'll find nothing underneath to draw your interest. Special effects, nice retro costumes, and plenty of moody lighting dazzle the eyes, and yet, at no point did I ever feel a connection to any of it. For what it is, it isn't bad, but it lacks any true distinction, which makes it a rather disposable form of entertainment for just about all audiences. The story , just never is able to bother with such things as characters to identify with and a tale worth following. The only place left to go is into the humor department, as there are a few quips here and there that might be funny if they were set up properly, but the delivery tends to favour gunfire and mayhem much more than dialogue, so these jokes do little but languish noticed but unappreciated. Silly items like vacuum tubes that run all over the metropolis just never catch the eye of anyone, but when a whole town doesn't recognize that there is an invisible high-rise hotel in their midst, perhaps the entire city of New York is under a perpetual hypnotic spell of wide scale inobservance. After a film like Batman, a flick like The Shadow feels more like second-hand goods. Ironically, resembling its namesake.

How did this not become a monster hit?
Perhaps because The Shadow was made in a time before every studio with a dime climbed on the comic book bandwagon. Anyway, maybe it's the franchise which got away.Alec Baldwin is fantastic and charismatic as the eponymous hero, in a stylish and atmospheric film which manages to combine humour, romance, and thrills and spills galore. Set in a golden-age 1920's-30's San Francisco, The Shadow is the alter-ego of a man who has seen the dark side of his personality, and is given the chance to atone. The special effects are small-scale by today's standards, but are used effectively and never become clunky. If you want a family film with a little edge to it, and 100% enjoyability, then take a chance on this unsung gem!

Excellent movie.
Alec Baldwin does an excellent job portraying the Shadow. As Lamont Cranston in an earlier life, he was a criminal killing many, a monk transforms into the shadow, he has powers that he can make people do things and forget others. As the shadow he is dressed in black, transforms his face and carries 2 guns, he has a network of supporters. He saves Sab Shimano from gangsters and being forced in concrete over the Brooklyn Bridge. Jonathan Winters does an excellent job as a police commissioner giving humor in the story. John Lone comes back as a relative of Genghis Khan who wants to use a bomb to destroy the city. Lone also has special powers. Peter Boyle is excellent as Baldwin's driver. Penelope Ann Miller is a beautiful niece of Winters who seems to be able to hear Baldwin's thoughts and doesn't seem to succumb to Baldwin's mind powers. Tim Curry plays one of Lone's henchmen. Exciting clashes and special effects. Highly recommended.
