complicated game
We started to play this and I found it quite complicated to learn, good for people who like to get their teeth into a game

A really great, simple, fun game to play over and over again!
We were introduced to this game by a friend. We were a bit sceptical at first, but as soon as the first round was over we were hooked! I bought it for my family holiday and now my sister has bought it for some of her friends as a gift too! It’s pretty straightforward to get the hang of (the more players - up to 6! - the more competitive and challenging!). Rounds can go by pretty quickly but it certainly doesn’t get boring - a game to play over and over again!

Easy to learn
A nice little game that can be learnt quickly but the the more you play the more you can see how much there is to the game. Adding in the reformation expansion adds some nice new mechanics and works well. We have found the expansion works best with 4 or more players

I am the Duke! (You will get this once you play it...which you should!)
I played Coup after having played The Resistance, a game set and the same universe (and made by the same people). That game is very much about cooperation, Coup dispenses with any such notion, you have no friends here! The game is simple, there are 15 cards, 3 of each of the 5 characters. Each character has an ability and some also have a counter-ability. The game starts with each player having 2 cards face down in front of them, these represent the amount of influence (think lives) they have in court. When you lose all your influence you are out. Each turn the player will announce the character that they have "I am the ..." and then use this character's ability. The crux of the game hinges on the fact that they do not have to have this character in front of them to make this claim. The way in which is influence is (mostly) lost is through people challenging others on the character they claim to be holding. If the player was lying, then they lose influence (flip up a card of there choice, or the remaining one if already down to one), however, if the player is able to prove that they did in fact have the character that they claimed then the challenger is the one that loses influence. There are two other mechanisms via which influence can be lost; an assassination, the ability of the assassin and a coup, an action any character can but costs a lot of money. The only factor of this game that breaks one of the golden rules of game design is that of player elimination and for this I was tempted to dock a star. The saving grace of Coup is the speed at which a game is played, even if knocked out first you are unlikely to spend more than 5 minutes waiting even in a game with the full 5 players. We have also found this game as a great way to decided player order for the next more in depth game (think Game of Thrones) due to its clear winning/losing order and the fact it can be wrapped up in 15-20 mins.

Lie for your life!
Coup is a short bluffing game where players take actions based on the characters they have (or are pretending to have). Using a combination of deception, deduction and luck the aim is to be the last surviving player. Life is fragile in Coup - players will need to decide carefully when they can afford to bluff (or call a bluff) as the consequences of getting it wrong are deadly.Learning the rules will take 5 mins and games usually last about 10 mins. Whilst you can play with 2 or 3 players I've found the game to be much more fun with a higher number.Marcus Brutus:+ Game is easy to learn/teach and the summary cards included provide a good reminder of the available actions whilst you play.+ Scope for a variety of strategies - do you play aggressively for a 'strong' position, or act passively in the hope of avoiding attention?+ The physical quality of the game is good and the artwork on the cards is great.+ Good mechanics to prevent stalling and stalemate.+ Compact and portable - great for the pub or holidays.Julius Caesar:- If you get killed off quickly you're stuck waiting for the game to finish (although games have a short duration so the wait isn't too long).- I found short term re-playability to be limited; I wouldn't be interested in playing more than a few games in one sitting as it gets a bit repetitive. Longer term re-playability is better though, especially with different groups of people.Unless you really don't like bluffing games (e.g. from playing One Night Ultimate Werewolf or similar) you'll probably enjoy playing Coup. It's quick, fun and not too expensive, making it accessible and enjoyable for both regular gamers and those with a more casual interest.

"I'm a Duke!", "NO, I'M A DUKE", "Get out of it, I'm the only Duke on the table..."
What a game. I was introduced to this by some colleagues, and ended up buying it before Christmas to play with the family (but then buying it AGAIN when one of my friends insisted that I sell it on to him). It's a simple game, which is best played with 4 or more people. If you don't have at least 4 people, it's not worth playing. If you can, always try and get 6 people playing the game though, as it makes the whole experience more enjoyable. I've explained it to people of all ages (even a 8 year old), and a few rounds of play leaves people quite comfortable playing it without any guidance. The essence of the game is to be the last man, or woman, standing. You start with two cards, which can be a combination of 5 characters who each have different advantages. Importantly, you don't get to see anyone else's cards. Thus, the game becomes a bluffing game, as you can pretend to be any character you want. However, it's a dangerous game to play, as anyone at the table can call you out if they think you're lying. It gets ridiculous at times, but is a balanced game which can be played in many different ways. Make no mistake though, it's not complicated. There are expansions available, but I haven't had chance to check them out yet.Rounds also last less than 15minutes with a group of 6. So if you want something quick you can play with family and friends occasionally, this is something worth picking up.
