Wonderland and other confections
This volume starts where volume 3 left off... with Ranka, Haruhi's dad, coming home to find Haruhi on the floor of their apartment and Tamaki more or less on top of her. (It was an accident). Ranka decides Tamaki is a louse, and then reveals that Kyoya has been in contact with him for some time now. He seems to accept the rest of the host club boys, even enjoying being seen in the company of such sexy guys, but bullies Tamaki. The rest of the gang figures out that actually, Ranka and Tamaki have a lot in common, which may be why Haruhi can deal so efficiently with the idiot prince. That's followed with a story just before Valentine's Day, when Hunny suddenly is found to have a cavity. Mori looks at Tamaki, who announces that to support Hunny (who can't eat sweets until he recovers), the Host Club will ban sweets and not celebrate Valentine's in the traditional Japanese manner (where girls give chocolate to guys they like). Hunny grows more and more upset as the days lengthen for him, and he finally lashes out, "I hate you, Takashi!" (Mori's first name is Takashi; only Hunny calls him that). Which is when Haruhi figures out what is behind Mori's actions as well. (It's one of my favourite Mori stories in the whole series). After that story, there's a bit of nonsense that doesn't seem to fit into the overall storyline, basically taking "Alice in Wonderland" and putting various members of the Host Club in either the role of Alice or other parts. Haruhi spends longest in the role of Alice (it's the only part she plays) and has Tamaki and the others arguing about which guy will marry her. Kyoya is the villain of the story, a Black Queen who does everything because of budgets, mainly. The story ends with Haruhi-Alice waking up when her mom Kyoya finds her in the garden, while the rest of the host club is stuck in Wonderland forever. After that, we head back to more typical Ouran territory. The head of the school newspaper tells Tamaki a sob story about how the paper will be closed unless they can tell a story that everybody in school will want to read, so he wants to follow the Host Club around and report on them. In fact, he believes that Tamaki created the club purely to strengthen connections to various students in the school so he could manipulate them for his own benefit. Tamaki never figures this out, but Kyoya and the others do, and they tell the newsguys that if they print a story claiming that Tamaki is trying to use others, they will use their own rather substantial influence to wreck them... not because Tamaki would want it, or ask them to, but because they all want to protect Tamaki. The volume ends with a story about a girl at another high school that everybody thinks is angelic because of her voice and manners and looks. But the girl has a sneaky devious side, except for a young teacher she has a crush on. To her dismay, though, she learns that the teacher (who she thought was generous and sweet) is another devious sort. Despite this revelation, she comes to spend a great deal of time with him, and develops a deep affection for him. It's slightly creepy, given the teacher-student aspect, but it's also an interesting personality study.

Review for Vol 1 to 18!
All the way from Volume One to around Volume Eight (not really sure because I read them altogether and there wasn't a specific marker) Ouran Host Club seems to be just a romantic comedy with the usual array of characters. The goofy stupid guy (Tamaki), the nerd (Haruhi), the mischievous (the Hitachin twins a.k.a. Hikaru and Kauro), the cute one (Honinozuka), the serious one (Morinozuka) and the evil one (Kyoya). But later on, I realized that it was so much more. There was heartbreak (I literally read the last few Volumes with watery eyes), there was pain and there was love."Listen Haruhi.I'm me before I'm a Suoh. And I'm proud of that fact.-Tamaki Suoh."I realized that Tamaki isn't all that stupid, that there's a lot about him that no one knows, that there's a lot of pain he overcame to become the aloof guy he is now.I realized the importance of family and at the same time I understood what depending on family too much would lead to.Ouran Host Club was not just a High school Romantic Comedy, it was real life.I had already watched and loved the Anime series before reading this, but the Manga is so much better.Ouran Host Club has definitely left a mark on me, and I'll never ever forget it. And I'm pretty sure I'll be re-reading it again and again and again.
