Unexpected and Delightful
I bought this book because Linda Holmes on NPR is funny, smart and sometimes unexpected. After finishing this book, I wished there was more because I wanted to follow these unconventional yet oh so normal characters.Well done, Ms. Holmes…a funny, touching, very intimate story of a wooden duck decoy (how strange an object is that)?! The relationships are endearing, complicated and real. Laurie is not Barbie, thank goodness!Loved it and will miss these two!

Amazing
I love the way Linda Holmes writes. I started this book and couldn't put it down. A must read if you love a different kind of love story

Pleasant read but not terribly great.
Well, this was a pleasant book. I enjoyed the mystery part and the romance part, and the characters were largely well written, but I could have done without the novel's navel-gazing and lecturing about being alone/ independent vs. being together/ dependent. Seems like some false angst to me. And the character was a bit old to be coming to terms with it, but apparently we have to have a moral to the story or some sort of lesson learned. Seems like maybe only the character or the author needed to hash this out on the page. I didn't really need to hear all that or care about it as described in the story. Also, I don't go looking for errors in books, but two errors jumped out at me because they confused me or were so blatant that I knew they were wrong: 1. Hardback p. 144, 2nd paragraph: "Dot" should be "Ginger." Bad mistake. Dot's dead and not there! 2. Hardback p. 194, 3nd full paragraph "rhinestone water bottle" is wrong, because she had a rhinestone phone case, not a rhinestone water bottle. See pp. 190-191 where we have an detailed listing of what she's wearing and carrying, including "a water bottle with the words I WISH THIS WERE WINE stenciled on it ..., and a rhinestone iPhone case."

Funny and sweet. I really like her writing.
When Laurie finds a hand-carved duck among her deceased great-aunt’s belongings, she’s determined to find out the secret behind it in this wonderfully funny, sweet story. And, if you haven’t read the author’s EVVIE DRAKE STARTS OVER, it’s wonderful!

Frustrating
I love her writing, but found the “love him”, “love him not enough” theme frustrating. Going to encourage others to read her first book.

Flying Solo
What a wonderful story- the main character, Laurie, really resonated with me. As a single woman in my late 50's she articulated so much of what I feel- this hummingbird life. Add in the duck mystery and this was a book I couldn't put down.

Loved this!
Thanks for another great read, Linda. This book had a little bit of everything....romance, mystery, history, and decoys! Well-worth the wait. Have fun in Bethany tomorrow night.

Lovely book!
Thoroughly enjoyed this second novel of Linda Holmes. The story itself is fairly static, but the characterisations and dialogue are just so entertaining the book doesn’t drag at all. A fairly simple tale, but quite thought-provoking about the relationships we have and want. Lauren loves Nick very much, but doesn’t want conventional coupledom, rather like the deceased aged aunt whose house she’s clearing. Love that LH’s books are set in Maine, a place this Brit has visited once and fell in love with - probably added to my real enjoyment of the novel. More please, Ms Holmes … thank you!
