Back to the basics.
I am a graphic designer and with Wacom tablets and iPads I had totally gotten away from the old paper and pencil. My seven year old daughter had been after me for months to give her art lessons so as I was looking for a starter art set for her, I stumbled upon this set. On a whim, I bought it, and am so glad I did. When it arrived, I immediately started using it.The build quality is descent. The box is sturdy but the hardware may leave me wanting. We'll see. The products inside seems to be really good quality. This showcases the Royal Langnickel brand to which I was unfamiliar. Everything that Ive used so far does it's job well. When I sharpen a pencil with the sharpener provided the lead stays in the center. By that I mean that when you're done sharpening, the wood has not been taken off only one side exposing only half the lead. People will blame this on the sharpener when in reality its the pencil. The lead is not centered in the wood therefore allowing the wood to remain. Just a little sign of quality that I look for. The product are all mounted in that really flimsy plastic hat you find in most products today. Is working fine for now.I'm telling you folks, getting back to pencil and charcoal drawing has been worth it's weight in therapy. Picking out the paper with the right tooth. Feeling the responsiveness of the different leads or charcoals is something that is missing in all this technology. Reminds me of why I fell in love with creating art in the first place. Enjoy!

It also had very useful items & tools included
I'm a beginning artist, this boxed set contained everything needed to sketch, draw & color. It also had very useful items & tools included! The price was fantastic! The only thing about the item that was not so great a few of the art sticks were in pieces, but would purchase this item again, I liked how the box set was presented, wooden box is beautiful looking, helps protect the items & Great Items for the value!FeaturesThe Deluxe Sketching Box Set by Royal & Langnickel is great for those who love to sketch and drawThe art set features a large array of tools to start experimenting or refine the sketching and drawing talentsIncludes 12 graphite pencils, 6 compressed graphite sticks, 6 compressed charcoal sticks, 12 compressed color sticks, 4 pastel pencils, and moreAlso includes 1 5-inch by 7-inch sketching/drawing pad, 1 mannequin, 1 6-inch ruler, 1 sanding block, 1 sharpener and moreWooden storage box measures 13'-7/8'-inch by 6'-7/8'-inch by 2'-1/2'-inch

Fabulous kit for beginners
This is a fantastic set for beginners (such as myself). The sketch book which is included is a waste of space & money (4 7/8" x 6 1/2", 12 sheets), but aside from that, you get a wide variety of pencils, charcoal, compressed charcoal sticks, and pastel sticks, so that you can start to get a handle on the tools available. You also get 3 different size stumps (used for blending). There is one small kneadable eraser and one drawing eraser (I think it may be referred to by some as a "pearl" eraser). There is a pencil sharpener and a sanding block to get a good sharp point on your pencils (and stumps ?). The 12 graphite pencils range from 6B to 5H. There are 3 charcoal pencils, 1 ea hard, med & soft. 3 different shades brown pastel pencils as well as a white one. 6 sketching sticks (square) ranging from 8B to B and 6 charcoal sticks which I can't quite read the label on to tell you exactly what they are. There are also 12 compressed color sticks. What is super cool (and the reason I focused in on this set to purchase) is there's a little mannequin you can pose to sketch from. There are also 4 sticks of vine charcoal, which WHO KNEW could be so great to sketch with! Little learning experiences like that make a kit worthwhile when you're starting out, even though you may wind up not using some of the tools beyond experimenting with them just enough to decide you don't like it. I wish instead of the stupid little sketch book they had included a stick holder, even though that would have kicked up the price.Update 12/28/15 Those who have commented that the case is shoddy are correct, one of the hinges fell off mine already. Also, the instant you start adding to your toolkit, you've got no place to put the new item, because the case has plastic insets that are molded for the items included and that's it. So if you're buying this kit for the case/organizer, this is not for you. Buy this kit for the variety of tools provided when you don't know exactly which tools you're going to settle on. If you're looking for something to organize your tools, try one or more of the Plano adjustable storage boxes - you can adjust the dividers (within limits) for different configurations of tools (pencils, erasers, ruler, charcoal sticks, etc). They're lightweight, and you can see what you're looking for before you open the box. Amazon carries about a zillion varieties of these, I got 2 of these Plano Connectable Satchel Stowaway. with Handle (Large) In spite of the crappy case, I'm leaving my rating at 5 stars because of the mannequin and the variety of tools.

Product is sound, box is mostly sound.
This art box was the size and design I was looking for exactly! The latches are sturdy so you won't end up with all of your art supplies all over your back seat or your backpack, wherever. The handle seems to hold up very well as well, and I don't think you would have to worry about any part of the physical box breaking. The one downside I saw when my brother opened this for Christmas was that the inserts were not held fast to the inside of the box, so one side of the art supplies falls out when he opens it. He said it's not that big of a deal and he likes it anyway, but if this is something that would bother you, I would consider yourself warned. The supplies themselves are great quality. My bother is a drawing guy, and the pencil variety was just what he wanted.

Great for young artist
This is a great Christmas/Birthday gift for a young artist. I know cuz my ten year old had me get her a second one ( I discovered her talent at 6 y/o when she drew an original My Little Pony, I couldn't believe her talent, shes amazing and has a passion for art. She's learning how to shade with this cute kit it has lots of gadgets that only she knows what each is used for. I recommend thisc100%!
