A Quick and Solid Summer Horror Read.
Friday, the 13th, meets backwoods Halloween Horror Nights, meets a badass female protagonist who knows what she's doing.Plot: 4/5Characters: 3/5Scare Factor: 2/5What immediately drew me to this book was the cover and the title. Then, I was sold when I read the synopsis and how the setting was a Camp in the middle of the woods, an interactive Horror game, etc. This book was a speedy read. I would have read this book in a day if it weren't for my work schedule. The pacing is quick, and I was instantaneously sucked into this story and did not want to put it down. I immediately fell in love with Charity and even the rest of the cast, but man, did I root for Charity. There's something about characters in a horror story that know the elements of horror, actively try to do the right thing, and call out the stupidly obvious steps to getting killed in a horror story that I love. I love when characters are aware of their situation and actively try to do the right thing instead of being cliche...while also giving us those horror scenarios we love. It almost always raises the stakes and the scare factor for me. While this book was creepy at times, it didn't scare me. I was disappointed that I finished it and didn't want to swear off cabins and summer camps in the woods. However, I know this is a YA novel, so I didn't expect it to be too scary; I just wanted more. The creepiest thing to me was the ending. I loved it. I loved the plot twist, and I'm both satisfied with the mystery of not knowing what happens next and so curious to see what did happen next. I recommend this book for a quick summer horror story that won't keep you up at night. It's worth a read, and I will be re-read it again next summer or so. Also, Kalynn Bayron is an excellent writer, and I've loved her previous works and look forward to what she brings to us next.

New take on the "Final Girl"
"You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight" is an absolutely phenomenal horror novel. Kalynn Bayron keeps you hooked on every page. Charity is an incredibly smart and resourceful protagonist. She is a character you can't help but root for as she works to keep herself and her friends alive. There's not many novels that have kept my attention until the final sentence, but this was one of them.

So suspenseful!
This book is so good and I couldn’t put it down! Charity spends her summer working for a camp in which patrons pay to get scared be living the events of popular scary movie The Curse of Camp Mirror Lake. As their summer season winds down some of the cast starts no showing for work. Assuming they went home early, Charity asks her girlfriend Bezi and their friend to come help out. Everything is going well until some random lady shows up warning them away. Afterwards things get worse as they hear strange noises, think they see people, and start seeing random objects. Could their be more to Camp Mirror Lake? What about the crew who no showed? Can they survive the night? Kalynn Bayron latest had me feeling all the tense emotions! Even in the daylight I could feel the fear! It’s intense and suspenseful and you won’t be able to put it down!

Scary and fun
This book was very nostalgic for me. It was akin to the point horror books from the 80s and 90s. Super fast to read but fun and just a little scary. I loved it

Fast, suspenseful read
I read this in one sitting. With all of the lights on. Huddled under a blanket. I went into this one blind, but as a fan of slasher films, I had a feeling of what to expect. I wasn’t disappointed! The book does a great job establishing the characters, and even while the beginning might feel like a slow burn, there’s a consistent aura of unease that will grip you. I loved the suspense of it all!I appreciated that the violence was highlighted without being too gruesome, and I love the relationship between the main characters. It was a fun, easy read!

So much potential....
The summary sounded so good, and the book had a lot of potential. Sadly, there were to many cliches/plottwists that weren't strung together in a cohesive manner, that the plot became muddle down.

I really enjoyed it!
I really enjoyed You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight!I actually ended up reading it in one sitting as I just couldn't put it down!I've recently had the urge to read a slasher, and for a fan of the genre, I didn't really have any, so I quickly bought this book, and I'm so happy that it didn't disappoint! You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight is around 240 pages, and I have to admit I do wish it was a bit longer as I would have liked to know more about the characters.I still really liked the main character, Charity, and her girlfriend Bezi!To be honest, they were the only ones I was invested in, and another one that I will not mention...(If you've read the book, you may know who I mean)I really loved the first half of the book, but then there was a twist that I wasn't a big fan of. But by the end, I didn't mind it much as there were a lot more twists and turns that really surprised me!Especially that ending, it was so good!If you're looking for a great YA summer slasher horror read, I really do highly recommend this book!

Wild and eerie horror
There’s always a twist, but it only works if you don’t see it coming.”Firstly you will not catch me watching horror movies. My anxiety specifically around death and bad things happening mixed with my overactive mind? Nope. So I'm probably not the audience for this book and why it didn't exactly work for me. But I wanted to try it.This is the author's homage to slasher movies and the final girl. This is very much about the plot, about the eery atmosphere and the fight of the final girl. On one hand the characters are all pretty insignificant, this is a relatively quick book and we get glimpses into them but not really enough for them to feel real. That didn't stop be getting attached to characters when I really shouldn't and that's another reason why this genre is not for me, my stupid soft and squishy heart isn't equipped for the characters endgame. This is a quick read but the beginning is slow in some regards but that works for the story. We've got some seeds being planted and a calmness that allowed to settle into the story thinking I was safe lol but the creepy factor definitely picked up in that last quarter.I wouldn't say this book is heart thumping thrilling and that's coming from a full time scaredy cat. But it does get eerie and the creepy feeling picks up. Although I made sure to only read it in daylight so maybe that helped. Underneath the slasher and mystery murders plot was a narrative on corruption and greed which I never mind at all. But it took a turn that didn't really work for me and just went wild with essentially what was a paranormal element, conspiracy and cultish stuff. Perhaps that far fetched stuff mixed with the almost cartoonish villain(s) is part of the appeal of the genre and again down to me not being someone who engages with the genre. For me getting to the end of what was going on just resulted in a lot of crazy stuff happening and way more questions than answers in such a way where I'm just not sure what happened or how any of that would even be developed because there's no developing it on page or any concluding answers. I don't know if the author is wanting to do a sequel and maybe that's why but even then I'm still scratching my head in confusion. It was a fun read even if it didn't completely work for me and some of those twists in the end definitely got me! That very last one though? I literally shouted out "oh, come on!" Lol.If this is your preferred genre you might love it more than me.

An incredible sapphic horror from one of my favourite writers
It's been a while since I read the entirety of a book in a day, but this story was so good I really couldn't put it down. While it is a shorter read at around 230 pages, it was perfectly paced, giving time to set up the story and the characters, and even leave us clues that make sense later.I would describe this as a slow burn horror, rather than a basic slasher. I loved that there was enough breathing space to get to know the characters, while maintaining a creepy atmosphere at the camp ground, and when we lost them I was genuinely devastated. The ending gave us twists after twists, I was floored where the story went, I'm so used to the basic, easy to guess culprit but this story doesn't do that, it's much more elaborate. I was on such a high after the final pages I immediately screeched at the author over Twitter, I'm so hoping we get more horror from them.

I’ll never look at owls the same
I absolutely loved this book!I’m a huge fan of 80s/90s horror films, especially slashers. This book gave me all the nostalgic moments I wanted (and more). This was a wonderful love letter to the genreI enjoyed the isolated setting of a summer camp. The woods just enhanced the creepiness.I thought the characters were fantastic and felt very well developed. I loved the friendships and romances. I really was rooting for the kids to make it, I was very invested in this storyThe plot twists really got me! I didn’t see any of them coming. I will now need to remove every owl ornament I own from my houseThe end of this book had my hysterically sobbing, all the feels! I loved this, a wonderful summer spooky read
