Suitable for any level of knowledge
I haven't read this book myself, I bought it as a gift for someone who said she wanted to learn more about art and artists from that era. She has told me she loves this book and is thoroughly enjoying it, and it isn't too technical for someone with limited previous knowledge. It certainly has some wonderful illustrations.

Excellent Series of Books
I had already purchased the book on Degas and I was so delighted with it I bought this. It is crammed with beautiful images of Rembrandt's works each image is named and also which museum it is hanging in should you wish to see the real thing. I have already found two that are in a museum fifteen minutes from my house. This is a well bound hardback book and well worth the purchase price. If like me you are starting a collection of some of the great artists I would definetly recommend these. I intend to collect them all.

Beautiful book but frustratingly poor connection between illustrations and text
At first impression, this is really a beautiful book. Nice format, quality paper, loaded with illustrations. But once you start to read, you get really frustrated. Each topic is treated on two pages, with a headline and a topic introduction. Then follows the text about the subject. But some subjects cant be treated in only two pages, so numerous times a topic is introduced, and then left hanging without the conclusion. Furthermore, the text mentions a lot of paintings, and describe the circumstances in which they were painted. But more often than not, the Pictures described are NOT included in the illustrations. The illustrations appear to be distributed more or less ar random. In addition, the book contains a lot of pictures of paintings NOT by Rembrandt. OK, it is interesting also to see pictures by some of his pupils, but not THAT many. On numerous pages more than half of the Pictures are by other painters. Why?? The text part of the book is from page 6 to 97. The remaining part Page 101 to 251 is called The Gallery with hundreds of Pictures in cronological order. This is fine, but there is no sufficient index of the Pictures, the text part does not Refer to the Gallery part (if you want to chek if the Picture described is there), and a lot of the described Pictures are not even included in THAT part. Really a VERY frustrating experience :-(

I couldn't be more pleased with this book. The biography of Rembrant was detailed and illuminating, And 500 photos of some of his best work was beyond the call of duty. Just fabulous!

Books by Hermes House are extremely well produced and sold at rather unbelievable prices (compared to other books of this kind). I bought a fair number of them so this review is about their books on artists as well as history and culture. Each book is written by an expert in the field and tries to provide the reader with a generalized but not superficial understanding of the subject. The illustrations are aptly chosen and support the textual content well. These are meant to be primarily pictorial works and therefore the books have been designed to speak about their subject matter through pictures supported by words. And they succeed on both counts. Some books that are about culture and history work the other way round as well. Either way, the relationship between pictures and words are always appropriate in the context of the subject matter. Considering the prices they are giving this at, I would recommend interested buyers to snap them up lest they suddenly hike their prices.
