A Must-Read for Runners… or Anyone Really
The level of access the author had to the athletes and coaches involved drives an amazing feel of authenticity throughout the entire book. While the story is well known in the running community, it has never been told with this level of detail and intimacy. Runners and non-runners alike will be inspired by this story. The only question remaining is, “When does the movie come out?!”

A very cool story!
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. A very in-depth look into the world of distance running that I didn't expect to appreciate. There is an obvious passion for the sport by the author. As a non-runner I found it all very interesting. I can only imagine how much runners would like it.

Passion for Running
Well-thought out and researched look at elite Kenyan runners. Gearhart has a passion for the written word and her subject matter. Excellent pick for runners and even those interested in pursuing your passion at the highest level and what it takes to get there.

Could have been so good!
Being an aficionado and lover of the sport since the late 90s (Haile Gebreselassie was a god in my youth) I was beyond excited for this book. Its release aligned with Kipyegon's brilliant 2023 season, Kamworer's cross country redemption and, obviously, Kipchoge's massive achievements in recent years. And, having just read Michael Crawley's stunning Out of Thin Air, I was expecting a similar book but with the focus on Kenya. The accolades (including one from Crawley) only raised those expectations.Unfortunately, this just didn't hit the mark for me. The writing was dull and cliche-ridden. At times it felt like uninspired long-winded journalism with hardly any structure or drama. I was bored. Really bored. And, if someone who cares about the subject is bored (I catch all marathon majors and Diamond League meets), I can't imagine how the average reader must feel. There's an artful way to produce sports biographies while making them enjoyable (i.e. Barefoot Runner or Today We Die a Little!) and this one fell far short of that. Much of it was just a regurgitating facts.Patrick Sang deserves a much better biography. The wait continues for me.2-stars because I do love the subject and managed to get some nuggets of wisdom. It just feels like a missed opportunity overall.
