Solo Piano Collection: Best of British - 29 British Gems Arranged for the Intermediate Pianist
H**H
A great collection of 20th and 21st century British music.
The range of pieces is excellent, ranging from Elgar (well actually Arne!) to Carl Jenkins and James MacMillan, with a great range in between. I wanted it for Peter Maxwell Davies' "Farewell to Stromness" but there's plenty more besides. The title says "Intermediate Pianist" and I'm more "Advanced Beginner" but there are plenty of pieces that I can see myself playing in the next few months/years. I'd say that anyone at about Grade 5 level would be able to tackle most of what's in the book. I'm around Grade 3, so even the easiest pieces are challenging, but there are pieces I can attempt.Overall, I like the wide range of music and I hope to get good value from it.

offering a good range and some less obvious repertoire
Too much Jenkins, but the other pieces are lovely, offering a good range and some less obvious repertoire. (I bought it principally for 'Farewell to Stromness'.) Nice clear print, well laid out. A problem is that the spine has to be broken before pages will lie flat.

Good value selection
Like another reviewer, I bought this mainly so I could learn Farewell to Stromness. Now I have!It is a nuisance that the book has to be cracked to lie open but that's a minor detail. As a book full of popular music, I think it's very good value, especially compared with buying the pieces separately. Nice to find Peter Warlock there.

Not what I'd call Intermediate
I got to grade 5 piano, and thought that 'Intermediate' would not be too challenging. However, when I got the music and looked at it, it looked far harder. I don't think that there were many points when there were not at least 5 fingers pressing keys at the same time. Not for me, I'm afraid
