Birds of Eastern Africa (Collins Field Guide)

great birding
I was most happy to be able to use the Collin's Birds guide in Ethiopia. The drawings are good, albeit somewhat small, but the result is a relatively light compact guide. Moreover what is really good is the presence of a map per bird species, and totally phantastic is that the guide covers Ethiopia, what is not the case with other guides on East Africa.

Packed full of birds!
Great points: Compact enough to take on my safari, prompt dispatchSomething to Consider: This is NOT the same as the Collins Guide to Birds 2nd Ed, in case you're comparing the two. Simplistic overview of each bird and for some reason, each "chapter" is names "Plate 1, 2, 3, etc" and you have to look back at the contents to work out which section you are in.Collins! Just name each section, why have you used this "Plate" convention? It's needlessly confusing.Otherwise, great little book and I look forward to using it in Africa!

Other field guides to the region are much better.
Of the three books I have for the birds of this region this one has the worst artwork, by far. Some of the author's other field guides are much better. Better stick with one of the other field guides to the region. I ended up leaving it at home.

A good compromise ...
Bought this new for £2.96 + p&p, so excellent value for money if you are a birder visiting East Africa. However, to fit 1700+ birds (96 colour plates with up to 24 species on a plate) in a pocketable book means that pictures are small. There are only 2 or 3 lines of information on most species, and distribution maps are in a separate section. But it is of a size that you can actually carry with you in the field and so I feel, on balance, worth buying.

Excellent!!
This book was perfect for our safari trip in Kenya. It was easy to find the birds I needed to indentify even bumping around in the back of a 4x4!

Good concise guide
Had all the birds we saw on trip to Kagando Hospital and surrounding area. The QE nature reserve close by is teaming with birds.

Perhaps less help from the pictures than in some other guide books. Beggars can't be choosers when it comes to books one can afford on such a specialist area and can be carried around in the field.

Bunte Vogelwelt Ostafrikas
Das Buch gibt einen wirklich guten Überblick über die reiche Vogelwelt in Ostafrika. Er wäre wünschenswert, dass von dem Buch bald eine deutsche Ausgabe erscheint.
