Excellent print quality
It's like the taste of forgotten ice cream no one can ever make again. I echo the opinion of other reviewers that this is the first and the superior TV adaptation of Carries War. Perhaps the gem of the dvd is the transfer quality which is excellent. On first seeing Carrie in the train carriage I could pick out the red in her bow which was a good sign of things to come. The adaption by Marilyn Fox too is excellent. TV and books have a different cooking time but I clearly prefer this classic TV. It's lean, sweet, funny and especially nostalgic. The whole cast is spellbinding, especially Ms Fazakerley though she only appears briefly. But the real star is Juliet Waley. She is so natural and sincerely wise. Probably filmed during winter yet the atmosphere shines like summer. My favourite dialogue is Albert's "I suppose younger brothers can be tiresome at times," which is the screenplay by Marilyn Fox and is not in the book. And Juliet Waleys marvelous, "Oh it'll make Mr Evans so happy when I tell him!" which is in the book but still different here. The last episode with Carrie and Nick walking off in Elgar-like music is most excellent. And the end credit music. Just like the taste of forgotten ice cream that no one can do again today.

1974
I last saw this series before I left school, these 25 minute episodes used to be aired on the BBC at around 5.15pm; my mum always liked this story, as she was growing up during wartime in the 1940's and could recall the times well. Watching it again after all these years, I was taken aback with the incredible script, that didn't dumb down to anyone; the meaning and emotions conveyed by the actors, are at a adult level and all without the modern fall back, of leaving lots of swearing in, to cover up for the paucity of the modern script. I thoroughly recommend this DVD to anyone who wants to be entertained by a good story, that is brought to life by actors and actresses who seem know how to do it really well; the attention to wartime detail seems first rate; the BBC (they made these themselves and didn't farm the work out) always scored with very high production values.

Ok
A bit slow to get going and some variation from the book but enjoyable match for the family.

A real bit of class
I remember watching this when I was 8 years old over 40 years ago. The bits that stuck with me then were the extraordinary names, Mr Johnny, and the skull.Watching it again as an adult I can now appreciate the real heart of the story - the relationships between families, and the relationaships between adults and children. The wartime setting is coincidental to the story, as is the story of the cursed skull. The cast is top notch, and features many actors I have grown up with on tv - Rosalie Crutchley, Avril Elgar, Patsy Smart, etc. Juliet Waley gives an extraordinary performance as Carrie - you can see every thought playing across her face. Aubrey Richards gives genuine pathos to the role of Mr Evans - he isn't the cardboard ogre people make him out to be. Nice to see Patsy Smart as a splendidly regal Mrs Gotabed - she usually played old crones! All filmed on location, the film print is ok. If the original prints still exist it would have been nice to have a gleaming new transfer.

Excellent to see this short BBC children's serial released on ...
Excellent to see this short BBC children's serial released on DVD.I was rather alarmed upon receiving this package to see "Screen format 16:9" in the details on the back, then seeing the main menu appear in widescreen format I feared that this was a case of some releasing studio deciding to trim down the picture to jump on the "widescreen at all costs" bandwagon. Fortunately though, despite the misleading note on the sleeve and the widescreen menu, the material is presented in its full, original 4:3 format. In case Amazon merges this review with some other later release of the serial, please note that my comments above refer to the Dazzler Media release, catalogue no. DAZD0190.
