Arrived quickly, like new, love this series of books, quick to read and a nice platform to work out what you want to read more deeply about.

This book was the perfect tool for my studies in Fine Art at University. Written in simple to understand terms, it offers the reader a condensed version of concepts in Art Theory. Handy small size too, for carrying around.

A brilliant book that opened doors to a topic that had always seemed mysterious to me. I would recommend to anyone even vaguely interested in any of the arts.

As an art student, I found this book incredible sharp and to- the-point... detailing a wide range of pieces and artists some of never even considered before... this has been useful for my current project as a reference, though I also believe that people wanting to read this simply for pleasure will get a brief yet brilliant insight into the world of art.

Interesting and informative book, ideal for students and those interested in the arts.

As a person unfamiliar with theoretical approach to understanding Art, i was pleasantly surprised at how interesting and accessible it was. The book is very insightful and balanced in its assessments of some of the most controversial aspects of contemporary art. It describes different and sometimes diverging theories of art and is aimed at answering one basic question "What is Art".I would highly recommend it as a general introduction to Art Theory to people unfamiliar with the field.

I was very disappointed in this book. I love the "Very Short Introduction" series and have a large collection of them. When I purchased this book I was hoping to learn about art theory, but the majority of the book focuses on how women, minority groups and non-western cultures have been excluded from recognition in the art world, while this is certainly true and unacceptable (abhorrent in fact), this book book should focus on the topics of art theory, i.e., what is art; what is beauty; how have art conventions changed over time, etc.

This book is really interesting with many good points on the theories of art. It has expanded my view of art as well as taught me a lot about different artists and their art. By reading this book, I have expanded my own personal art theories and learned to incorporate what I have learned into my own artwork. I will definitely be using this book in my future classroom as well as in my own life.

I found this a very fine introductory text on art theory, a topic with which I was unfamiliar prior to reading this Cynthia Freeman introduction.

This book is okay, but I was wondering what makes art "good" or "bad" and who gets to decide that (which is why I bought it) and I didn't feel like the book really gave me anything concrete to answer that.

these books are ideal for when you are waiting...lightweight in size and volume and heavy weight in content. I like having something interesting on hand for moments of downtime and these volumes are perfect for that.

I found this book to do just what I had hoped. It's like a syllabus from a very smart, highly organized professor, who fleshes out the subjects just enough, and lets you know where exactly to look for more. It's concise, intelligent, and informative, and it saved me a lot of time in working out an outline on the subject (I'm an art professor myself). Cynthia Freeland -- thank you! What clarity!

I liked this book so much I bought it twice. It is also published under the title "But Is It Art?"
