Loose ends left me puzzled and unsatisfied
Diving into my first Lisa Unger book was a thrilling ride through secrets and storms. Set in a luxurious cottage in Georgia woods, the story follows three couples whose lives are entangled in a web of hidden affairs and dark mysteries.🌟 Unger masterfully weaves alternating timelines between past and present, creating an intriguing narrative that keeps you guessing. The stormy backdrop mirrors the tempestuous relationships and the secrets that unfold.👥 While the numerous characters offer a diverse range of perspectives, some might feel more like props than fully fleshed-out personas. A couple of unresolved storylines left me wanting more closure.🕰️ The fast-paced shifts between timelines added complexity to the plot, but at times, they didn't seamlessly align. The multiple POVs, usually a favorite of mine, didn't quite click this time.❓ The anticipation for all puzzle pieces to fit together builds, but some loose ends left me puzzled and unsatisfied. A few unresolved threads could leave you pondering long after the final page.

An Honest Review!
When it comes to crafting gloomy psychological thrillers, Lisa Unger is superb. This book’s suspenseful plot expertly connects the dots between all the important players. Since I rarely get to read for extended periods, I discovered that I always looked forward to returning to the novel. It’s also a challenging, fragmented read because of how the characters interact with one another and how their histories are portrayed. There were more than two storylines, with twists and linkages that weren’t immediately obvious. I’m pleased I persisted in reading, and I hope you will too. In the end, everything fits together. It’s about family, both the ones we select and the ones we are born into. There were many characters, and occasionally I had to go back to make sure I remembered who they were all. Interesting plot using the very popular DNA testing kits and how persons might be found utilizing them. I liked this book a lot. There were several points of view, family drama, and I just kind of guessed who did it properly. It was fascinating from beginning to end. I disliked one of the characters because of how well the author developed them. I think authors that are capable of doing that are amazing. The reader will need to fasten their seatbelt as they read every chapter with an unquenchable thirst to understand more about the macabre drama that is still playing out. With each page, they want to watch more of this horrifying event play outgrows.

intense mystery thriller
Genetics. The story, its mystery, unfolds at a somewhat fast pace revealing small pieces at a time. A quick read to a respectable ending with flawed characters some better, some much worse, a dark atmospheric setting perfect for crimes to unfold.

Exciting thriller, hard to put down
I finished this book much more quickly than usual, just couldn't put it down. The main plot is highly intriguing and always leaves you guessing. As others have pointed out, the way that plot lines are intertwined is a bit complex at times, but I felt that did contribute to the story. And I didn't struggle to keep up with the plot, which happens sometimes with other books.

Cabin In A Storm With People And Secrets
3.5 rounded up. Interesting enough to keep me guessing, but my mental leap at about 75% through ruined it for myself. My brain needs a spoiler alert klaxon. 6 people, all connected by blood, marriage, or friendship spend a weekend in a remote cabin. Uh oh! Storm rolls in, coinciding with a storm of another sort, havoc wreaked by those with an agenda. Probably justly so, but a bit harsh on the methods. Rolled along well enough, bit of a dead end/red herring with the cabin host, who had the potential with early creepiness to be another thing to dread in the storyline.

Unger at Her Best
Unger is at her best with this novel. The characters confidently inhabit the page. Multi-layered, dimensional and compelling. Refreshing when characters have depth, flaws, struggles and backstories worth reading. The story is intricate, well-paced and drenched in suspense. Pages turn in a flurry, impossible to guess where the story will go next or how it will end. Full of surprises. The reader first thinks that it is merely a story about a typical sunny getaway with family and friends. We anticipate something light. The cast of characters are traveling from the shimmering Florida coast to a luxury enclave in the remote Georgia woods, all courtesy of Mako and Liza. Mako’s a wealthy tech-mogul, who wants to give his sister (Hannah) and her husband, Bruce, the chance to rest, relax and recharge. Cricket, Hannah’s best friend, and her boyfriend, Joshua, round out the group. The trip has been planned months in advance, but the women all feel a sense of inexplicable foreboding beforehand. Unger does an excellent job of creating the palpable unease that gradually builds. They each push worry aside, trying to appreciate the generous gesture of a paid vacation. A chef is on site, and Bracken, the resort owner, promises to be on-hand for whatever they may need. Everything seems perfect, for an enjoyable weekend. But, the cabin has a haunted history and a serious storm threatens ominously in the background. Trouble is definitely brewing, but the reader has no idea what is actually about to occur.Additionally, another storyline runs concurrently with Hannah and her crew. We meet Henry, a young boy, who tragically loses his mother. As an adult, he embarks on a search for family, identity and belonging.Unger expertly weaves together these disparate threads, creating an evocative tale about love, loyalty, darkness, deceit and redemption. After the last page, I found myself thinking about the story. It posed several lingering questions: How well do we truly know the familiar people in our lives? What makes a family? How far would you go to protect those that you love? How strong are the bonds that bind us together? Are they gossamer or steel? What would it take to shatter those bonds?Such a great read. Thoroughly enjoyed all the intrigue and the introspection that it prompted.Unger is a talented writer and a gifted storyteller.
