Not what I expected!
Initially very sceptical about the art style and story but genuinely came to love it! I enjoy manga like Berserk, Vinland Saga, and Dorohedoro, so I was surprised at how such a different art style and story actually has its charm and beauty and intrigue.I was sceptical about the story initially as it seems to be more cheerful than my usual go to seinen manga but it actually has an underlying eeriness to it that kept me curious, it reveals a bit of itself and the strange world setting bit by bit. Really looking forward to reading the next volumes!

Pretty good but not everyone's cup of tea
Good read. I watched the anime on hidive and thought it was pretty good so thought I'd try the manga. It's about a bunch of gem people who are completely made of some kind of organic crystalline material that stores their memories. They seem to be near immortal as they live for hundreds of years and even if they're broken apart they fine as long as they find all the pieces and stick them back together. The story follows Phosphophylite(?), one of the weakest gems who is tasked with creating an encyclopedia of the natural world. She is, however, more interested in fighting against the mysterious lunarians, who appear at random times from the sky with the intent of destroying what few gems are left.Interesting and I'm curious to see where the story goes, yet saying that I don't think this is everyone's cup of tea. Mostly because it's not particularly focused on scenes of action (although it does have that to some degree), but rather on character development and interaction.I would have given 5 stars but I knocked one off because of the art. Don't get me wrong, I really, really like the art style in this, I love the unique way the gems are drawn and some scenes have a lot of nice detail. However some sections (mainly in the few action scenes) the art seemed very ambiguous, very hard to see what was going on or who was doing what to who. I found myself sometimes rotating the book to see if I was looking at it right. It might just be me of course, but to be honest it's my only main critique of book. Other than that it's really good and I can't wait to read more.

A chilling, beautiful story.
A beautiful, eerie series.Land of the Lustrous tells the story of a world where humanity is long extinct. 20-something gem people are the only sentient life left. Immortal, genderless, and immune to pain, all they have is each other. It sounds like it'd be a miserable read, but it has a great sense of humour, and is serious when appropriate. Some aspects of it are chilling.Since they are immortal and immune to pain, their bodies can be shattered and they're fine; even with a smashed face, missing eyes, pieces falling off, they can talk and smile and laugh as normal. They just get pieced back together later. But for every piece of them they lose, they lose memories. Losing a limb doesn't hurt, it costs you a part of who you are. And during their battles with the vicious Lunarians, who take them away and imprison them forever on the Moon (effectively death), they do lose often. The protagonist is the youngest of all the gems, and is utterly useless. They are fragile, brittle, lazy, childish, petty, snarky, hilarious, relatable, and not allowed to fight. Over the series, they grow, change, mature, and find their place in their world. It's a beautiful story. This lets the series explore a wide range of themes: coming-of-age, identity, searching for a purpose in life, fear, trauma, grief, the nature of the body, and others.Fantastic plot, an amazing protagonist, a loveable supporting cast, non-binary characters, amazing otherworldly art, chilling body horror, and plenty of deeper themes and subtext to get into if you want to. It's sort of an action, comedy, mystery, horror. Also has an AMAZING anime adaptation of the first few volumes that will hopefully get a sequel. It deserves it!
