Indispensable! Owned it for 8 months and can't live without it. Updated after using it for 2.5 years, 5 years, and 9.5 years!!
At the bottom, I've updated a couple of comments now that I use the iLap for my MacBook Pro.I bought my iLap in July of 2006 for my PowerBook G4. I was having problems with my PowerBook being unbearably hot when placed on my lap so I decided to give the iLap a try.The iLap has surpassed my expectations. I feel absolutely no heat on my lap from my PowerBook even though I use my PowerBook many hours at a time, every day. The hinged front and back cushions offer enough flexibility that I can use the iLap in many different positions, such as sitting up or laying on my back on the couch. I also find the cushions offer enough support that I don't have problems with discomfort from the weight or metal of my PowerBook or the iLap itself.I have not had the slipping problem others have reported. My iLap came with 4 rubbery pads that grip the PowerBook very well. If I do notice any slippage, all I have to do is clean the pads and the feet on my PowerBook, and the slippage stops completely. I have to clean it maybe every 2 or 3 months which is very reasonable. I constantly walk around with my PowerBook on my iLap, and the grip is so good that I have to be careful to remind myself that they are not truly attached because I sometimes find myself not holding my PowerBook as securely as I should. So far, in 8 months of use, the iLap has not allowed my PowerBook to slip even with my occasional carelessness. The iLap has held up very well after 8 months. The cushions have not degraded, the front cushion remains firmly attached (although, I usually don't take it off as there's no need), and while I'm sure the cushions must be dirty by now, you wouldn't know it by looking at it. I have used a lint remover on the cushions a couple of times to clean up cat hairs when my cat thinks my closed PowerBook is her personal warmed napping spot, but that's about as much care as my iLap has needed.I have found my iLap to be so good that I take it everywhere I go, including finding ways to put it in suitcases when I go out of town. The hinged front cushion helps greatly when packing it, and it's stood up well through many plane rides in the front pocket of suitcases that were checked in.I can't say enough good things about my iLap. It is one accessory that I find completely indispensable for my laptop usage and comfort. It receives my highest of recommendations, especially considering how well it's held up for so long.UPDATE: I have now used my same iLap for 2.5 years! I still can't live without it! I have had a MacBook Pro for about 1.5 years now, and continue to use my iLap with it. I finally did run into slipping problems as the rubbery pads hardened with age. But I found a great way to resolve this issue. When I bought my MacBook Pro, I immediately put it in a clear hardshell case to protect it. To stop it from slipping on the iLap, I simply put velcro on my hardshell case and on the iLap. Now the MacBook Pro stays put without any slipping at all no matter how I position it.If you give velcro a try, I suggest putting the soft side on the Mac's case and the hook side on the iLap itself. That way when you take your Mac somewhere in which you don't take the iLap, the velcro on the bottom isn't a problem.I also wanted to comment that I ended up removing the cushion in the front of the iLap, and I have found it to be very comfortable on my lap without it.I've used Macintosh computers since 1986, and this is one accessory that I have used the longest. I cannot be happier that I bought it.UPDATE 2: Wow, I ran across my old review and just realized that I've been using my iLap for over 5 years! It's still doing great! I'm now using it with my 3rd computer, and still can't imagine being without it. I use this thing every single day for many hours each day. Amazing value to get this much use out of a product. It's still just as good as ever!UPDATE 3: This has to be the longest I have ever used a computer accessory. It has now been 9.5 YEARS, and it's still going strong! I bought this iLap on July 12, 2006. Today is Jan 28, 2016. In just a few months, it will be 10 years old! A decade! What computer accessory ever lasts that long, especially when you use it almost all day long every day during that time! I am a long-time computer addict so trust me when I say I use this stand every day for most of the day (I do have to sleep sometimes LOL). Okay, by now the cushion has flattened down (that's to be expected), but the iLap still very comfortable, still stops the heat on my lap, and still prevents scratches when I set it down on wood surfaces. Also, one of the bolts that holds the back swivel part has loosened up a bit on one side, but that does not affect the iLap's ability to do its job. In fact, if I didn't look at the joints, I wouldn't have noticed any change at all. I guess one day the rivet will finally give in, maybe pop through its hole. If that happens, I will absolutely get another iLap. Definitely one of my best buys ever!

Great product, a must have for all laptops
It is a great product for the notebook MacBook Pro. It helps dissipate heat and makes the computer easy to use on your lap and also works as a desktop computer stand. Love ALL Rain Design products

Sadly, I really find this iLap almost perfect
I really wanted to hate this Macbook Air stand because it's so ridiculously expensive, but the fact is, it's almost perfect. The only problem with it as I see it is that the front cushion doesn't extend wider and digs a bit into my forearms. I think this problem will get worse the taller the user. I'm 6'1", but if I had wider shoulders or was a steroid monkey, the problem would be exacerbated.Whatever the case may be, the iLap beats the alternative of not having a stand. The Macbook Air 13 has been very rough on me ergonomically. The leading edge digs into my chest when I work in bed, and the biggest problem for me is the hard and unforgiving surface on either side of the mousepad. In addition to carpal tunnel, I developed pisiform bone pain from the slightest pressure on my palms. It's been maddening. I purchased all sorts of wrist splints and carpal tunnel gloves and wraps.Frankly speaking, I usually don't need any of those wrist wraps anymore since this iLap's pillow is high and firm enough to elevate my palms so they hover above the surface of the Macbook for pain-free typing. The hand position is also improved, and I make fewer typos thanks to the iLap.When I first saw this listed on Amazon, I scoffed at the price and then tried to build my own hillbilly solution with foam, an old laptop cooler and velcro. It turned out to be a waste of time and materials. So I just gave in and bought the iLap.It works well in every condition tested so far. In bed against my chest, on my lap, bed or desk. I haven't tried removing the velvet pillow due to the carpal tunnel I mentioned. The Macbook should have come with this stand. This iLap is just one of those ultra expensive-- but indispensable-- proprietary aftermarket accessories. The other one that immediately comes to mind is the TStand for my iPad Air 2. Have to mention it because I love the thing so much even though I'm still bitter over the pricing. Now if I were to do this all over again, I'd probably get the 17" model. OK, it wouldn't match my little Macbook Air toy, but it would be much more comfortable -- and more useful for future new laptops, etc. I'd give it 5 stars if the cushion was just a few inches wider horizontally. I suspect that over time the foam will condense and I'll lose the benefit of elevated palms. But only time will tell.Anyway, take a deep breath and just buy this stupid thing. You'll probably love it.

Best stand available for Mac Book Pro
I have used an iLap with my Mac Book Pro every day for years and it has really helped my comfort levels. It is great at stopping the laptop from getting too hot and so helps preserve the life of the battery as well as saving your lap from that unpleasant burning feeling and "fireside tartan" after-effect. I also find it helps you position it more comfortably so that you aren't bending your neck down quite as far and your wrists are well supported by the foam cushion at the front of the stand. I sometimes use the iLap with a cushion underneath it to lift the Mac Book up to the perfect height to work at. It also works very well on a desk if you need to use your laptop there.I have marked it down to 4 stars because the cushion quickly becomes limp where it joins the stand and so falls off quite easily. It does slide on and off reasonably easily, but it is a nuisance after having the stand for a wee while. I also find that cat fur and any other fuzz from clothing etc is murder to get off the velvet cover of the stand after you have used it for a few months. Not a deal-breaker, but annoying none the less.As others have said it is pricey for all that it is, but given that there isn't an alternative in the 17" size it is still well worth it - and it's a lot cheaper than replacing the battery.

Pricey but Perfect
I admit I chose this stand over others mainly due to the sleek design, looking at it you'd think that it was made by apple specifically for the Macbook Aluminium. After using it continuously for the last 4 months I must say it works flawlessly. With the cushion fitted on the front it sits at the perfect angle to type whilst on your lap, and when you remove it the angle is great for on the desk or even in bed.Like the previous reviewer I too was worried when my Macbook started sliding around at the slightest tilt or movement, then when I checked the box I noticed the silicone pads that you're supposed to stick on the base to line up with the feet of the laptop! Once these are on problem over, you can literally tilt the stand past 45 degrees without the laptop moving an inch.If it would have been around £30 I would have given it 5 stars, but for anybody that uses their laptop for prolonged periods on their lap then this iLap stand is hard to beat.... and it looks pretty cool too!

A world of difference
I've had one of these for 3 years. If you routinely use your MacBook in bed or a couch, this can completely transform the experience. The padding pushes the trackpad and keyboard to a comfortable distance, so you can keep your wrists straight. In the summer, it keeps the machine from burning your lap. It's just great.Unfortunately, as pretty as the pillow initially looks, it will wear, fade and become generally disgusting over time. It also attaches to the aluminum base loosely via velcro, which makes it flap around in a rather unimpressive manner, even more so as it ages and the cover kind of stretches out. I wish the pillow had some kind of a rail, slid on from the side and snapped snugly in place, and that the cover was a hard-wearing material, possibly leather, or not.Still, the functionality and lack of suitable alternatives earns this product 4 stars.
