Beautiful Book
Beautiful photos of the Arabian region, taken from a unique perspective. I always give visitors to Oman a copy of this book as a souvenir.

empty
The editor who permitted this book to be published in its present state should be sacked as she turned what is potentially a great book into an inaccurate presential mess for the following reasons. 1)the book has no table of contents, index, bibliography,or referances all of which are essential in a book such as this. 2)the section on Shibam and the satelite pictures of Mirab and Wadi Doon should be deleted as none of them are in the Empty Quarter. 3)the map on p14 should never have been used as it must have come out of some museum. There are excellent current day mapsFor those who bother to read this book it is divided into 2 parts a)Exploration and b)Rab Al-Khali (the Empty Quarter)-this part has sub sections on water, oil,Shibam , Sheba, wildlife, camels and satelite pictures.Definately not recommended, not worth a penny.

Air photography of the desert.
Many beautiful photos, some not so impressive. After viewing a good number of desert photos it becomes an tad banal. However there still are some amazing and fantastic birds eye photographs.

stupendo
Ho scoperto per caso che George Steinmetz avesse anche pubblicato questo ed altri libri simili. Non molto altro da dire se non stupendo e meraviglioso. Ottima idea regalo per chi ama la fotografia e i deserti

Superb
One of the bests books about desertic landscape. A perfect mix between aerial captures and ground level ones, a true magic and an artist shooting pictures to conquer our hearts and soul. Civilization started around deserts, and with this book you'll understand it all. Absolutely recommended!

See and Understand a Place That Is Very Hard to Visit
As Steinmetz says, the Empty Quarter (the interior of the southern Arabian peninsula) was first seen by Europeans long after they had visited the South and North Poles. It isn't much easier to visit today. But visiting just the coastal areas of the UAE, Oman, Yemen and Saudi is like trying to understand the USA after just visiting NYC, LA, Miami and Seattle. Go inland 100 miles from say Dubai and you are in a very very different place. From travelling around the edges, I was expecting a lot of empty. I wasn't expecting the people and wildlife who live there now - and ruins which show people have lived there for a long time. The book benefits from Steinmetz being a celebrity photographer. Otherwise he would not have got permission and support from the Saudi government and others. Most of us could never get to these places let alone take great photographs.
