Confused
Total rubbish. Dont know why i continued to read it to the end. None of the characters were sympathetic except the young children. The plot bounced round time lin aconfusing manner and wandered so much that the story became unbelievable.

A disappointing read.
I agree with the reviews that I read. The book wasn't badly written - and I did plod on to the bitter end - and then wondered why I'd bothered! The story was really silly with very few interesting characters, it just seemed to get worse and worse towards the end. I was glad when I finished it. Would not recommend.

From the first page I knew I wouldn't like the story despite the good synopsis
If you want to feel morbid then this is the book for you! I can't help but wonder if authors who write these sort of books suffer from clinical depression. From the first page I knew I wouldn't like the story despite the good synopsis. It was written in a jerky fashion with unfinished sentences, sentences consisting of one word (if there is such a thing) or without a verb, also, the 'ly' endings were often missing off adverbs. Half way through I couldn't stand it anymore and skipped through various passages to the last chapters. I certainly won't be reading anymore of Christobel Kent's books if they are all of such a depressing content as this one is, in fact, I just couldn't wait to read a good dose of Carole Matthews wit to cheer myself up again.

Long winded and laboured!
This book started reasonably well. You found about a bit about how Fran and Nathan met etc. Then He dies. The book then sort of unravels what sort of person he was and what sort of person Fran is. To be honest, it gets very boring very quickly. Naturally she's a suspect but what I didn't like was the childish policemen - you don't see the police portrayed so badly in good books anymore. I found this very old fashioned and cheesy. It just wasn't interesting to learn about Nathan's predictable double life etc..You just don't know enough about him to care. Equally, I found Fran boring. So she had a sort of fling, so she sort of was in touch with her ex. Still boring because nothing really happens.I found reading this book laboured - especially when I got to around 60% and realised there was still so much left. It was so difficult to finish because you simply don't care. There was no atmosphere, no drama, no twists - nothing. I hate saying this as I love reading but I couldn't wait for this book to end.

Disjointed
It was told from too many angles with different names just popping up. Nothing really clear until the very end and still not clear even then. A frustrating read.

Hard going!
The story itself is OK but this is not the easiest of books to read. The jumping between timelines, mid-chapter is very confusing - I kept having to re-read parts to check I wasn't going mad. I'm afraid the characters lack depth and the story itself becomes repetitive as the book goes on. I had to finish it to find out what happened but I won't be recommending it to anyone. Shame.

Beautiful and resolute woman repeatedly falls victim to a series of male cads.
The hero gains the reader's sympathy for her terrible choice in menfolk - her first boyfriend is a drugs pusher and her second positively psychotic. On top of that the policeman assigned to deal with her case is a male chauvinist of the worst 1970s kind. So too is his (needless to say) somewhat gormless male sidekick. Its the ladies in this book who are the heroes. There's Fran, the main character in the box who mysteriously can't decide if she's been raped on the same night her husband was brutally murdered. For all her admirable stoicism in coping with the aftermath of the murder you cannot but be amazed that she should marry the mysterious and apparently asexual Nathan so speedily. Her gullibility is further exposed when after her marriage she agrees to be whisked off to live in a Lincolnshire hovel where her husband confiscates her laptop and leaves her alone every day. Fran appears to have no idea what his job is or where he goes to. She is as confused about what he does as she is about the citlrcumstances of her rape. But all is not lost! Who should come riding to Fran's rescue than Alli, a female police officer who is diligent and caring in contrast to the boorishness of her male colleagues. In the end you'll be glad to hear it's the ladies who prevail.

Very boring book
This is the worst book I have ever come across. The way it is written gives you a headache alone jumping all over the place from one person to the next. Don't waste your time on it... I will never get that time back :-(
