Here are 2 similar but separate mills. As with all my turnings, they are done by hand, eye and measurements. I don't use a duplicator on my lathe to make these. By doing them by hand, this makes them similar, but not the same. There are subtle differences. On each top there is either an "S" or "P", so it's a cinch to tell the difference between the salt and pepper mills. The actual grinding surface for the salt is ceramic, while the pepper is metal. This greatly reduces the chances of the salt doing corrosive damage to the grinding surface. They are also easy to fill with your favorite pepper corns and salt. By unscrewing the adjustment screw and removing the cap, you simple fill the chamber. Each mill is approximately 3 3/4" tall and the diameter of the base is a little over 2 1/8". They are both made from solid piece of red oak. The wood is finished with a pickle sauce and a couple of coats of shellac. The way I make the pickle sauce, I let the steel wool soak in the vinegar for a few days to a week. It makes the wood darker with a grayish sometimes a purplish aged hue. With the red oak, some parts of the wood don't accept the solution, which to me also adds to a more rustic finish. Followed by hand waxing. These are the actual salt and pepper mills you'll be receiving.
