Lovely creamy pastels - fun to use!
This is a review of the set of 72 Haiya oil pastels by Paul Rubens. Please note that the Haiya pastels are a new version - the older Paul Rubens sets are reportedly not as soft or creamy. There’s a great colour selection in the 72 set, whether you do portraits, landscapes, urban scenes or seascapes, there should be enough to work with. The pastels themselves are very buttery and creamy, I really noticed how different they felt to my budget-friendly Pentels. By comparison, the harder Pentels are much more difficult to blend. These Haiya pastels are messier but much more workable, they feel like paints. Also, my Pentels have a slightly headachey odour, whereas these do not.I like that they come with a blank swatch card for you to fill in with all the colours, and there is information about the pigments and lightfast ratings. A nice and useful set for those who don’t want to splash out on a pricier brand such as Sennelier.

Very oily very soft
I am new to oil pastels and these had good reviews so I thought I’d try them. If you want a painterly impasto effect these are great, beautiful colours creamy consistency and blend well but if you want to draw with them then these are not the pastels for you, you cannot get any detail with them.Basically you have extremely soft (these ones) medium soft, and harder less blender-able ones. I will use these for impasto techniques but I actually prefer the Artecho oil pastels which are creamy enough to blend but still firm enough to draw with and are even cheaper to buy.

Butterweich

Onaangename ervaring ...

Very pigmented and soft oil pastels
I have used Paul Rubens before and loved it. The Haiya set is very comparable to Sennelier and did not disappoint.Important note: some of the oil pastels are VERY oily, so have tissue paper at hand. That being said, it's maybe 5 out of the 72 colours that are that way.
