An Excellent "Universal" Solution
So, I had this bright idea to install a "multi function appliance" in the kitchen, where I have been spending a lot of time pursuing my new cooking hobby. As a novice, I often have to follow recipes, time cooking events, and look online for help and hints on things I haven't tried before, like de-boning a chicken.I purchased a new 10.1 Android Tablet, and using various apps, was able to access my bank of stored recipes, view online articles, and even time multiple events simultaneously, but the Tab was always in the way and at risk on the counter of my small kitchen. The obvious choice was to mount it onto the cabinet door above the prep counter adjacent to the stove.I looked for a system that would allow me to mount the Pad securely, rotate it at will so helpful videos can be seen in widescreen, but recipes can be read like a sheet of paper, and easily remove the Pad when I wanted to. Turns out that there are numerous solutions for the whole Apple iPad family of products, but very few elegant ones for other brands. The exelium "UP" series was one of the few that I found after much searching that promised to satisfy all my requirements. First off, it's "universal" fit. The holding bracket is designed to "stretch" using strong springs so you can clip it over the edges of your device. The jaws are well padded, and the springs are strong enough to securely hold the device, and a tiny lip on the front edge of each jaw prevents it from slipping out front wise. You do have to mount the mating support button to whatever surface you want the pad on, but that is accomplished by a single screw through the middle of the button. You use whatever type of screw corresponds to the material you are fastening to; i.e. drywall anchor, wood screw, sheet metal screw, or bolt.Once securely mounted, you latch the bracket attached to the device over the button, and you're done! You can rotate the device 360° without fear of it unlatching, because the design only allows it to slide on or off the button when both components are facing up, at which point gravity keeps it latched until you lift it off.PROS:1. Very sturdy and "safe" design and construction. I have no fear that the Pad will slip off or that the button will "let go."2. You can purchase additional mounting buttons separately, and increase the number of places you can mount your device easily. The bracket is compatible with other exelium "UP" mounting options, such as a car mount, or their goose neck mount, increasing your usability options.3. At first, I was reluctant to drill a hole to mount the button, but after reading some disaster stories from people using adhesive or hook-and-loop mounts, I'm a convert. This thing just isn't going to fall off unexpectedly into the soup. Unfortunately, there are no "magic" answers. Adhesives strong enough to hold up a 10.1" tablet permanently will likely damage the surface if they ever have to be removed anyway. The 3M Command adhesive shows promise, but read the horror stories before you commit.4. An unexpected plus, the bracket gives you a finger hold when it's not clipped to the button, so if you need to carry the tablet around for something, you get a better grip than you would on a plain tablet.5. Depending on what kind of case you have your Pad in, this bracket may fit even with the case on if it's not too thick or heavy.CONS:1. The bracket and button space the tab about an inch from the surface, so it doesn't mount "flush." This might be a negative for some people, but makes it easy to turn the Tab and install and remove it.So, for a non-Apple Pad, this is an excellent solution. I am very pleased with its quality, elegance, sturdiness, and functionality. Best of all, when I am trying to read a recipe with onion teary eyes, I can now reach up and make the text as big as I want.
