GTC General Technologies Corp TA300 Smartach D Digital Diesel Engine Tachometer

I used to have a Mac diesel tachometer that was $430.00, I know this product will give years of service for the price.

I really hoped that this tachometer would work as advertised. It doesn't. The Piezoelectric sensor that came with the unit is a one size fits none design. The square center hole in the sensorwill make four point contact with a 6 mm or 1/4" line. When you consider that the sensor generates a pulse because of the tiny expansion of fuel injector line as the fuel pressure rises in the line, it doesn't seem like four points of contact is a good idea. This makes the unit very very sensitive to vibration. If you have a diesel engine that doesn't vibrate it should work. I have never seen one. I have tried this unit on two engines so far and it didn't work at all on one and would only work at a high idle or below on the other. The manufacturer does make piezoelectric sensors that make full contact with the line (a round center hole). They come in 1/4", 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm sizes. The only problem is, so far I have not found a source to purchase the sensors or what they might cost. So I guess the thing will sit will sit on my desk as a conversation piece. I will update this review if I figure something out. It is very convenient when it works.
