I have no answer, but I sympathise. Born 1956, I am of a generation in which every man knew his hat size, always given in quarter inch increments;,and for cheap sun hats and the like, we would try them on, knowing one maker’s X was another’s XL. I’m afraid we’re stuck with it now, except for more expensive purchases. I have two flat caps bought from shops where traditional sizes are used.
