Zero, Zero, Stephen (Blu-Ray Eureka)
Stephen Chow, whose real name is Chow Sing-chi, at the time of shooting this film, has not yet established himself globally as the comic actor that the whole world will discover with Shaolin Soccer and Crazy Kung Fu (Kung Fu Hustle). But in From Beijing with Love, we already recognize his touch of totally crazy humor with repeated ideas that surprise us.The story, on the other hand, runs out of steam and falls into banal action scenes. However, you shouldn't deny your pleasure, especially if you have appreciated Chow's other successes. We can congratulate Eureka for this high caliber blu-ray edition. The quality is still there for the image and sound. Without forgetting the numerous bonuses + a small information booklet. The disk is locked B; which will not help it to make itself well known in other markets outside Europe.

This film is good but the subtitles are not great
This film is good but the subtitles are not great. I was going to give up on it but did actually get used to it in the end and it is possible to still follow the story and get most of the jokes. The yes Asia DVD supposedly has the same problem so it's not really a better option and is probably dearer.

Not Chow at his best, but it has curiosity value
From Beijing With Love is a minor Stephen Chow spoof of the Bond films that has a few good jokes but never hits the heights. Among the pluses: a neat sendup of the obligatory Bond checking into a hotel sequence, a Q figure who specialises in useless inventions such as a solar powered torch that only works when it's light, and the use of a pornographic video as an anaesthetic while removing a bullet. There's also the novelty of its hero working for the Communist Chinese secret service, but this still feels somewhat strained even at 84 minutes. More two-and-a-half out of five than three-out-of-five.
