Healing revived in the church
I read this book probably 30-40 years ago, and it still resonates with me. Macnutt said the church needs to get back to its roots & be like the first century church, offering prayer and healing for the suffering in the world. Lots of history in this book that sets the stage for the ministry of healing to explode.

MacNutt’s book on Healing
The most definitive book on Healing ever published , a most read for anyone seeking to be healed. The Gospel is presented in a powerful way, that Charts came to heal the duck and deliver people from suffering.

MacNutt writes with love, transparency, credibility
The more I study healing, the more I run into the name of this Catholic Priest, Francis MacNutt. For over 4 decades now he has been quite active in the international conversation. This text was originally, published in the 1970s, but was revised in 1999. There are dozens of 5-star reviews, and rightfully so; MacNutt writes for the non-academic and writes with love, compassion, transparency and fervor. He is inspirational and approachable, enlightening and credible.MacNutt references a video series that analyzes the impact of prayer on rheumatoid arthritis. I had some difficulty tracking this down, but eventually found 2 videos, one from an academic/scientific perspective (called "Healing Hands: effects of prayer on rheumatoid arthritis") and one from a more popular perspective (called "Shall we Pray"). Both are excellent and short additions to a reading of this book. For the Christian reader unfamiliar with Catholic tradition, only a few of the sections will give pause. He does suggest that healing is more likely when prayer for in conjunction with sacraments like Baptism, Eucharist and Confession. Whatever your opinion of that, the rest of the book is great. For the graduate level student, this work is understandably light. A reader interested in digging deeper into the theological implications of healing should skim this work, but invest more time in something like "Israels Divine Healer" by Michael Brown, which presents many of the same conclusions here, but in a much deeper manner working through the broad spectrum of biblical discussion.

Excellent source of information
This book was extremely helpful to me. I never gave much thought to the healing ministry, mainly because it all seemed so foreign and so over-the-top. I thought all faith healers were a bunch of kooks and that miraculous healings were few and far between. It's sad that I thought all of that because I am a Christian and I grew up in a Christian home. Then I started dating this guy who felt called into the healing ministry. I was really troubled by this (and so was my family). So I started doing research. I didn't want to just bail out on anything if the healing ministry is valid, if it's real and it's of God. I came across this book and it explained it all for me. If you have doubts about the healing ministry, or you just need some more information... Read this book. It's amazing. There are some things in it than I have doubts about, but those are just small issues; trivial things that probably aren't that important. I like this book because Dr MacNutt isn't some radical, holy-rolling, throw-the-spirit-at-all-people kind of person. He is down to earth and he lays out the facts like they are. He doesn't claim to know the mysteries behind healing and even confesses that he, in no way, has all the answers. But this guy is experienced and it is well worth your time to read this book.

An engineer's approach to healing prayer
Francis MacNutt is an unusually clear-thinking and intellectually honest author on the subject of prayer. While he has learned from sources as diverse as Agnes Sanford, Tommy Tyson, and Jo Kimmel on the one hand and Paul Tournier on the other, his synthesis is his own. MacNutt's is the closest I have known so far to an engineering approach to prayer. This volume is his most comprehensive on the subject of Christian healing prayer. He traces healing prayer back to the earliest centuries of the church; identifies the usual arguments against healing prayer and answers them in simple terms; and discusses the major factors involved. In Part Three he usefully divides the kinds of healing that we can pray for into forgiveness of sins, inner healing of emotional problems, physical healing, and deliverance and exorcism, and discusses the different approaches that he has found useful for each.MacNutt warns against turning individual experience with healing into a general principle: "When universal laws are erroneously deduced from paricular inspirations, grace becomes law all over again," he says in the chapter on "The Mystery of Faith." Nevertheless, he does elucidate general principles that he has worked out from the multitude of experiences he has had over the years.Chapter 17, entitled "Twelve Reasons Why People Are Not Healed," avoids the reductionism that many practitioners of healing prayer fall into. For example, he does allow for redemptive suffering and recognizes that while sin (such as resentment) can indeed trap us into a physical ailment, it is not always or even mainly the reason for sickness.

Great Investment
I haven’t read more than 2 chapters out of this book and i already want to write 5 star review; it just absolutely remarkable! It’s beautiful. The advice and teachings are dynamite! I’ve read very little so far, but just in this small amount that I’ve read, it’s well worth the money for the book. Well worth it. Also the authors writing is very easy to read and digest which is very helpful. Very glad I made this purchase, might consider buying a few more to hand out to my fellow chaplains.

Amazing book (had a different cover than pictured)
Had a different cover - but turned out to be exactly the book I was after in the first place.Healing - revised and expanded - silver anniversary edition (grey cover) I had been looking for this book for weeks and thought I was getting a similar book. Imagine my surprise when I got exaclty what I had been looking for! This book is amazing, it goes over the bible's word, today's world, and how we can tie the two together in a way that Jesus attempted to do on his short time walking this earth. This book had to grace my collection (and I only have 5 that I found worthy to have the place of honor on my book shelf after all of these years).God put a copy of this book in my hands not just once, but five times in the local church. After signing it out for a while, I just had to get a copy for myself.

A Godly and Gracious man, on a subject close to his heart.
Having heard Francis (and his wife Judith) speak at the Toronto Christian Fellowship, and been influenced by his grace, gentleness, and mass of experiance and wisdom, I read this book with great interest and found it a huge help. It deals with the subject matter throuroughly. Warts and all. It reminds us how far we may have let ourselves fall from the Glory bestowed on us by Christ and the gifts he has placed with in us. It calls us to dig deep into our honesty reserves, our courage, and our humility. It spurs us on to take huge risks of faith, and to put our trust in the one who promised, and the one who is ultimatly responsible for the outworking of our prayers of faith to see the sick healed, the lame leap, and yes, the dead rise. I thank God for you Francis and your eloquent humility and power as a writer. (Please forgive my inevitable spelling misstakes.)

Standard and exciting work on Christian healing
I read this for the first time in 1979 and was impressed with the liveliness and wisdom in it. Theologically it is very sound with a very balanced approach. Experientially it is exciting and informative without being sensationalist. I would highly recommend this to anyone thinking about praying for people for healing and especially in a Church context where care can be exercised. Churches thinking about stetting up healing prayer teams need to read this book. Written when the Charismatic renewal was fresh in the Catholic Church (I am not a Catholic) it has an endearing tone to it and is a treat to read. Inspiring!

Sensible & Inspirational
Francis MacNutt combines experience, wisdom &knowledge in this excellent and readable book on Christian spirituality & healing. Whilst grounded in the Roman Catholic tradition, he combines this with a broad ecumenical approach. His compassion, combined with a scholarly approach grounded in the scriptures and church traditions, ensures he is sound and practical. Recommended for the individual seeking physical /emotional healing or for those involved in such a ministry, this is an important contribution to the subject - realistic and faith - filled.
