Ignore the bad reviews
Obviously someone peed in their cheerios the day they wrote their review.Compared to other movies of the time, it's nothing spectacular, but still above average. But compared to modern movies, it's far and above more interesting. There are no CGI special effects which gives it a realistic and enjoyable feeling. The acting is solid and mostly consistent. There is enough action to keep things moving, and enough deep moments to show the depth of the situation portrayed. Most of the Chinese actors did a great job, and Richard Gere tried something that was probably a bit out of his comfort zone, which I appreciate. He isn't perfect, but that's what makes the movie work well, because who would act rational in those kinds of situations anyway??The plot shows the rigidity of anyone in positions of power, especially when race is involved. It was fascinating to see the differences in justice system (not sure of the accuracy of course), and they didn't force a love story on the viewers either.

Not the book! Not the book!
This must be watched as a comedy, in which case it is rather good. I kept laughing out loud about the movie's depiction of the behavior the suspect of a rape cum murder case gets away with...I assume because he's a righteous American among silly, corrupt Chinese (not to mention the Chinese girls who fall over backwards when meeting him).Gere plays an arrogant U.S. deal-maker in China who finds himself blood-spattered in his hotel room, with the corpse of a Chinese woman in the other room of his suite. To really appreciate this movie, you have to inverse the situation and imagine a Chinese guy being accused of the same in New York City - a man able to speak some of the most rudimentary basics of English only. Let's look at it from that angle, and call him Mr. Shen. Within a few hours, Mr. Shen requests and receives a Chinese translation of the U.S. penal code, and asserts his right to be a sort-of co-laywer of his own case as one night with the book made him quite expert. Among the highlights of what Mr. Shen does, and what he gets away with with impunity in and outside the courtroom, are:- while being transported outside the prison, he grabs a gun and runs after someone while being chased by the NYPD (it's just shrugged off)- in court, Mr. Shen openly refers to the DA with charming little remarks such as "Not so much smiling now, our prosecutor!" or "Shhhhhhhhhhhh" when the DA wants to raise on objection- when a bilingual U.S witness dares speak English, he sharply browbeats him by saying "You do speak Chinese, do you?", and the witness dutifully deposits in Chinese in a U.S court- when to be medically examined, Mr. Shen clutches his U.S. legal code book in front of his chest and keeps fighting having his heartbeat measured, shouting "Noooo! Not the book! Not the book!"And this is truly only a small part of Mr. Shen's wise behavior in a serious court case abroad. The Muppets couldn't have done it better.

A Profoundly Corrupt Chinese Government and Justice System
You will hate the Peoples Republic of China and the Chinese after viewing this film. It pains me to say this about the Chinese since one of my daughters-in-law is Chinese and she is a wonderful, thoughtful, kind, sensitive and caring young woman. In this film, Jack Moore, played beautifully by Richard Gere, is accused of murdering a lovely, young Chinese woman. He is literally thrown in jail by the Chinese police; abused by them, and at one point, severely beaten by Chinese thugs, who conveniently got into the jail with the help of the Chinese police.Moore is brought to trial, a system that is so corrupt that it befuddles the viewer. The evidence against him is overwhelming. It is obvious that he is being framed. Moore, himself, is an attorney. Any evidence that he tries to bring before the court is denied. His court-appointed attorney is Shen Yuen, played by Bai Ling, who is outstanding in her role, and who, at first, thinks he is guilty. However, she comes to believe he is innocent. She is able to bring him out of the jail to the scene of the crime. As they are travelling in the car, a high-ranking Chinese police officer tries to shoot Moore in the head. The corruption in the police and the government is beyond belief.I highly recommend this film. It's worth your time.

Freedom is worth it..
What can I say? Just happy that I was not born in China or any other other country having an oppressive regimes. I just hope the entire world celebrates justice, freedom and democracy.

Terrible sound quality
Even with the TV volume up as high as it can go the movie is very hard to hear. Had to watch with captions. The picture was great so gave it 2 stars.

Convincing and Compelling
Closer to 4.5. On the downside, there was one long action scene which was too long for me, and in sum, it was a bit of a tear-jerker. On the upside, good script and dialog, and clever plot, with some substance for a change, both at a societal and personal level. Good performances from all involved, and the female lead is outstanding.

Good movie!
I enjoyed this movie very much, but couldn't give it five stars because of the way it was produced or directed. The ideas and theme were excellent; however, it lost authenticity when Richard Gere looked like he had just spent a relaxing week on a hot beach in every scene. After being starved in prison and sleeping on a cold floor, with no running water in his cell, he didn't ask for food or a toothbrush when he was released into his lawyer's custody. He was severely beaten by three large thugs, and had one slight abrasion on his face. Other than that, the movie would have been excellent.

RED CORNER
GERE IS A BUSINESSMAN WRONGLY ACCUSED OF MURDER ON A BUSINESS TRIP TO CHINA. BAI LING IS HIS SCEPTICAL LAWYER, WHO RELUCTANTLY AGREES TO DEFEND HIM DESPITE HER PRIVATE CONVICTION THAT HE'S GUILTY. HOWEVER WHEN SHE REALISES HE'S BEEN FRAMED SHE BECOMES HIS ONLY ALLY WHEN EVEN HIS 'FRIENDS' AT THE AMERICAN EMBASSY FAIL TO SUPPORT HIM.BOTH AN INTRIGUING THRILLER AND A CHARACTER STUDY, THIS IS ONE OF THOSE FILMS THAT DESERVED A BIGGER AUDIENCE. THE PERFORMANCES OF GERE AND BAI LING CARRY THIS MOVIE, BUT IT'S AN INTERESTING LOOK AT LIFE BEHIND THE IRON CURTAIN - AND AN UNBIASED ONE, DESPITE WHAT PEOPLE MIGHT SAY.I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THE FILM, WHICH ARRIVED SPEEDILY AND IN PERFECT CONDITION.I'M VERY SATISFIED WITH THE SERVICE FROM AMAZON.

I had seen this film before and only for the actress Bai Ling. She is the only reason to watch so if you do not like her forget this film. If you do then please buy a copy as it's one of the best acting parts she has been offered. And if you like her in this then buy "Dumplings:.
