Great book - but for a certain audience
Got this to read to kids at an urban children's garden before we planted our sunflower house. I thought it would be appropriate for a range of elementary children and hesitant readers. However, it really is geared toward preschoolers and toddlers. Even the second graders found it childish. Don't let the token range of skin tones convince you it's inclusive. Both kids and adult interns commented that it was so steeped in middle class white privilege in terms of language, setting and style that they weren't comfortable reading it aloud. Eve Bunting is a well respected author, and the pictures and ideas are beautiful -- but will be best appreciated by a suburban, privileged, preschool audience. There it will be a big hit.

Wonderful rhyming book about the growth cycle of plants.
It's a great way to relate to the plants' growth cycle and how we need plants in our lives.

One of those Magical books
This is the book you recommend to your friends and give as a gift. It's the one you pick when it's your daughter's turn to do book club. It's the book you take with you to read to your child's Kindergarten class. This is the one you give to your niece because her grandmother died too young and you want to send her a random present in the mail so she knows she has family that thinks of her. This is the book you buy an extra copy of for the Pumpkin patch/farm in your area in hope that they might plant sunflowers in a circle.

My 4-year-old daughter's favorite book
We stumbled across this wonderful story at the library one day and checked it out. It was THE book to read at bedtime every single night for the three weeks we had it. She loves the idea of having a place to go with friends where parents are not allowed...and couldn't fit into if they were allowed. My daughter was SO upset when it was time for it to go back to the library that I bought a copy. Then we read it every night for the next three weeks. While she doesn't have to read it every night now, she still loves it.

Perfect gift for a sunflower enthusiast!
My six year old son planted sunflowers this year and this book was a perfect gift for him. I am thrilled that the words rhyme because that captures the interest of my younger children as well.

such a wonderful lesson
I bought this for our granddaughter to read to and plant a sunflower house. After retiring from education, I would read it to the classes I subbed in my old school, then plant a sunflower house because I was the so called science lady. It is more than a planting book. It deals with the circle of life, how we all die yet others will come after us. There were many special discussions with my little ones about people they had lost.

Lovely book
The simple rhyme made it a smooth rhythmic read for a group. The pupils are now growing their own sunflower house based on the changes described in the book.
