OK for getting started
Purchased this from Amazon so should be labeled a "Verified Purchase".No book can provide all the info one needs to develop into a good blues player. This takes time and much practice and experimentation.I found this book to be more for beginners and perhaps early intermediate players. I listened to the CD and the examples seemed somewhat rigid and uninspiring. It gets you started but if you listen to good players not just the Pros but even some on YouTube, you will immediately notice how their playing just flows better and sounds much more interesting/professional. I wonder if the examples in this book were step recorded via music software.Of course, just like any other book, it's up to you to take what's presented and experiment and alter the examples to try to develop the sound you want. The title doesn't say "Pro jazz blues Piano" but I just wish this book would have helped in creating a more sophisticated blues style. Regardless, will continue to listen to other good players and keep on experimenting.

Jazz Blues Piano book
I bought this book for reference material for Jazz and Blues. The book has many different exercises(85) to practice different Jazz styles and also has a backing track to hear how the exercises sound like. The book gets into allot of theory of the Jazz exercises. This book is not for the very beginner pianist. You need to know your chords(basic and extended,9th,13th,inversions,open chords, etc) and scale modes(dorian, etc) which it gets into pretty heavy. Each exercise, the book describes each measure what they are trying to do. Plus you get to hear what it sounds like on the Audio CD that comes with the book. There are some nice Jazz songs in the back of the book(7 of them). There are backing tracks for these also to hear what they sound like. Also gets into one comping style exercise by several different Jazz Blues artists such as Oscar Peterson,Charlie Parker, etc.Again, this is a great reference book on Jazz and Blues styles.Dave

Excellent for Intermediate Pianists!!!
I just love this book!It gives you the foundations for all types of Jazz-blues styles. By the time you finish this you'll be able to know exactly what is being played on a jazz-blues or blues record. This will help to really continue your developement after you get through the book.It covers harmonic foundations, rythmic motifs, comping, and improvisational keys used in the various jazz-blue styles. If followed properly, by analysing all the lessons and transposing them and mixing and matching the different styles and also improvising on the different examples, this book will take you from intermediate to advance in a matter of months. This is a jewel.

Jazz Blues-Piano
I'm having a lot of fun with this book/CD, especially the piano, bass and drums pieces with accompanying written music for the chords. One can improvise along with the CD music with the right hand, and learn how to comp with the left in due time. The book conatins a little music theory, a little of which is good. But some of it is,in my view, unnecessary to enjoy jazz blues. The combo book/cd is well worth the price!

No Cd content for Kindle
I recently purchased the Kindle version of this book and was surprised to find that the CD with all the necessary content for using the book is not included in the digital version. Amazon refunded me but could not resolve the issue and took the book back before the book was refunded. I was told that the publisher is responsible for the content in the kindle version of the books. Hal Leonard Corporation should therefore either specify as such for their Kindle version or make the CD content available in another format. There is even a picture of a Cd in upper left corner of the Kindle edition cover, not to mention that the introduction makes reference to the CD as a vital part of the book and learning process. You've been warned! This book is useless without the CD.

Thanks!
Mark Harrison has delivered an expert and concise set of lessons that has helped develop a scratchy keyboard-playing guitarist into semi-competent pianist - and I'm loving playing now! It also stands as a little reference book for those (like me) with short attention spans. Thanks, Mark!

An Amazing Achievement.
Oooh......Another superlative 'How To' book from Mark Harrison, on the subject of......Jazz Blues piano! If you're thinking, "Jazz Blues....isn't that just more 'my baby done left me' type stuff with slightly better chords?" then you'd be wrong. Bigly wrong - the downloadable audio content or CD depending on which edition you get, sounds incredible; sophisticated and slick. Track 5 uses G11 and G13 chord inversions with the bass or left hand providing 7ths and it's truly incredible how melodic and tasteful your playing can sound just by moving the bass note to alter the sound of these kinds of chord voicings that the typical intermediate player would use almost every finger on both hands to play. Which leads me on to my next point...Jazz pianists, like Jazz guitarists, do not play basic Root, Major or Minor 3rd and 5th note chords ever. If you fancy learning to play Jazz piano and intend to purchase this book, learn how to construct EVERY chord you already know and or about to know using just the 3rd and 7th notes (7th - 3rd - 7th). I hope you know your chord vocabulary inside out and can play 3rd & 7ths of every Minor 7, Dominant 7 and Major 7th chord, sharp or flat traversing the Circle of 5ths. If you do, you're sorted! If you don't, it's going to slow your progress right down. I'll update this "review" at a later date as I progress through this excellent volume.McRonsonUpdate: Whoa, this book is GOOD! From page 27 onwards, learn to play every chord with your left hand or you'll hafta to relearn them all each time you move onto a new section...I'd also fully recommend you buy this book first if you're intent on learning Jazz piano. The same author's tome on full fat Jazz is not for beginners or intermediate players at all. Jazz Blues piano really is Vol. 1 in this respect.

Excellent beginner's guide
This is an excellent book for anyone who can read music and has a basic level of piano ability. Whilst the explanations of chords and harmony can be overly technical at times, you can pick up a huge amount just by listening to the CD and playing the corresponding bars from the book. The style guide is particularly rewarding, and in no time at all I was playing something that sounded vaguely like Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock etc, in that it was at least reminiscent of their style albeit much slower and less technical! I have the bebop and blues book in this series and they combine to provide a great library of material.

Great book
Very well organised book. Modes and scales are easy to understand and more importantly play. He makes tricky concepts more simple to follow. A very good Intro to theory let alone piano itself .You will see rapid progress

Another winner
Another fine piano tutor by Mark Harrison - gives you plenty of insight into playing jazz blues piano styles, again well laid out and easy to follow. I really can't fault this book. Will definitely become a favorite with many players.

If you like jazz
this is the coolest book on Jazz I've got. It's the real thing, 100%. Can't wait to get started, but I'm not allowed to at the moment as it's too noisy. When I'm allowed to play it, I'll just have to play more quietly.
