2 piece unit
The 2" x 32" auger is a screw-together two-piece unit. This is not an issue unless you are drilling deep and catch a root. The unit will unscrew when reversed, and digging the auger portion out will be necessary.Construction is typical for the price, thus 3 stars (C).

Great for beach
So we purchased this to drill a hole on the beach for our umbrella and it works perfectly. We look like beach pros now!! This drills the hole deep enough that we no longer have to worry about the wind catching our umbrella. What used to take 15-30 minutes to setup now takes 1-2 minutes. Love this!!

Works perfectly
This worked perfectly in heavy clay soil. It comes as two pieces that screw together.

Worked better than I anticipated in our heavy clay/rocky PA soil
Pros: o Did the job I needed it to doCons: o The two-piece screw-together shaft might give you some funWould I recommend this to a friend: YESI wanted to set a piece of 1-5/8" metal post to mount our Starlink dishy. Also wanted to get down below the frost line, which is around 48" here... so, I had to dig a two foot deep hole large enough to fit the Ryobi 18V drill, then use this to get down past 48" (OK, I actually ended up 56" deep). I know how stony our ground is, so I was very skeptical that this auger would manage to do the job. Fortunately, I picked a spot where there are apparently no large rocks, and with patience and perseverance, the auger managed to bore the hole. I *did* get stuck on a couple of small rocks that stopped the auger, and when I put the drill in reverse, I *nearly* unscrewed the two halves of the shaft from one another... which would have left the lower half down in the hole. Granted, I could have dug it out if that had happened, but the whole (or should I say "hole") reason for getting this is so I could save myself some digging. I realized what was happening in time, and managed to pull on the shaft and get the entire auger out before it had completely unscrewed. Just be warned about that little "gotcha". So anyway, at the end of the day, I was very pleased with the fact that, even WITH the fairly challenging soil and stones, it DID get the job done, albeit a little bent and worse for wear (the auger, not me), but still usable.
