SUNTANis a coming of middle-age film, from Greek filmmaker Argyris Papadimitropoulos, that celebrates the beauty and strength of the youthful body, while simultaneously embracing its inevitable decay. For middle-aged Kostis ( Makis Papadimitriou), life has passed him by. As the newly appointed doctor of a tiny island, Kostis spends a dreary winter alone. By the time summer arrives, though, the island has turned into a thriving, wild vacation spot with nude beaches and crazy parties. When Kostis meets the beautiful and flirty Anna ( Elli Tringou), he falls hard for her and goes out of his way to impress her. Before long, Kostis is spending nearly all of his time getting drunk, partying hard, and even making out with Anna. What starts as a rediscovery with his lost-long youth, though, slowly turns into an obsession as Kostis is willing to do whatever it takes to keep his Anna. The eternal Greek summer provides the perfect background for this extravagance of craving and everything that goes with it: flirting, casual sex, drugs, alcohol and pushing the boundaries to see how far your body can go. DUAL FORMAT FEATURES: Stunning 1080p presentation (On the Blu-ray), with a progressive encode on the DVD 5.1 Surround and Stereo soundtrack options Optional English subtitles An interview with director Argyris Papadimitropoulos filmed exclusively for this release A behind the scenes documentary chronicling the films production Deleted scenes PRESS: Suntan is tremendously acted, fiercely and instantly absorbing, a tragicomic tale of male midlife breakdown The Guardian Argyris Papadimitropoulos scores a bull s-eye, in all senses, making Suntan a festival must-have, with certain Eurozone play if not beyond Variety Suntan isn t just a painful parable of male middle-aged lust, but a chilling exposé of privilege and deprivation: at heart, a story of class relations Film Comment

Suntan - Dual Disc Format
This is a low budget Greek film that didn't get wide distribution release but did win a couple of nominations for awards.I don't think the 18 certificate in the UK did it any favours, either. This is a dual format presentation with DVD and Bluray version on separate discs but with the same extras - which are exclusive (!) but minimal.English subtitles are selectable. In terms of the film - it shows a Greek island in a light you won't have seen before - off season and on - but for me it doesn't have an ending so much as it just stops - with the crisis it depicts having become a horror story. The cinematography and the suntans do make you want to spend the summer in Antiparos though, and follow at least in some of the footsteps of Byron.

Death in Venice meets Michael Haneke
Like a pop art Death in Venice meets Michael Haneke and Dogtooth, but set on a sleepy Greek Island. An excellent film, painful to watch at times, but a genuinely emotional piece about middle aged masculine fragility. Highly recommended. A minor technical gripe is the film was actually shot for 2.66:1 on lovely Russian lenses called the Lomos. Amazon has cropped it to what looks like 2.35:1. I really don't know why they continue to meddle with these things. It's quite simple, show it in it's intended ratio, thanks.

Thomas Mann in a modern Greek guise
A startlingly memorable film. Whilst it has obvious parallels with Death in Venice, it is also a strong parable of our modern obsession for youth and the body beautiful. Some I have seen this with find it not merely painful to watch but distasteful. I would not go that far, but there is no doubt that the film disturbingly invites you ultimately to emphasise with wrong person. Not for those who want a reminder of their elegant trip to Antiparos, but certainly recommended to those insterested in modern Greek life and culture; or indeed in a compelling story of loneliness and obsession.

... a lonely man who misreads the intentions of a fun loving girl
The tale of a lonely man who misreads the intentions of a fun loving girl, and hasn't got enough life experience to know when to walk away. A totally believable character, you actually feel sorry for him at the end, which has a surprising twist.

Loved it.
Any film that makes me cringe a bit gets a good review. Really glad I bought this. Pair it up with Ulrich Seidls Paradise Love for a themed double.

A sad tale.
A sad tale of middle age angst, infatuation and ultimately loss of control, but very watchable indeed
