Having left the hollers of Kentucky 15 years ago, Raylan Givens now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 15-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind. A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit. There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell, aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent, sociopathic desperado who's already slipped through the fingers of Detroit's finest once and aims to do so again. Mansell's lawyer, formidable Motor City native Carolyn Wilder, has every intention of representing her client, even as she finds herself caught in between cop and criminal, with her own game afoot as well. These three characters set out on a collision course in classic Elmore Leonard fashion, to see who makes it out of the City Primeval alive. Review: Loved it!! - Season 1 is fantastic! Review: Good series - Good series. They need to make another one!

An aged Raylan Givens in an unmistikable Elmore Leonard's plot
One can be surprised to find US Marshall Raylan Givens older but still dashing on the grim atmosphere of Detroit City. But we are quickly hooked once again by the Elmore Leonard's plot and characters. With a kind of Bonnie & Clyde couple of mad dogs who just kill a corrupted judge for a road collision while the Detroit police which was watching the judge think there is a huge plot behind this murder! City Primeval, the Elmore Leonard's original novel, doesn't feature Raylan Givens but another detective in the same mould so it's very easily that "our" Raylan takes his place on the series. Timothy Olyphant is the perfect Marshall who struggled through the Detroit jungle, full of gangsters and corrupted cops, as he was struggling at his native Harlan! An extremely good series with, at the very end, the surprise return of Boyd that announces a sequel! Good job!

Worth it to reach the last episode
As a fan of Justified, I was very happy to see Raylon Givens back in action again. But this isn't the old Justified. It's not set in Kentucky, but rather Detroit. There is no gallery of charming, poetry-speaking southern villains here, but rather one very dangerous lowlife that Raylon hunts while teaming up with the Detroit police. Raylon doesn't get many chances to square off in a pistol duel, and the story takes a while to develop. But it's well-written, the characters are interesting, and main villain is menacing enough to be a suitable opponent for our favorite US Marshal. And if you stick it out to the last episode, you may be in for a treat.

Pretty good
The first three seasons of the original Justified series were excellent. They were about Raylan interacting with other characters, but with a focus on Raylan. The final seasons lost focus. Justified City Primeval is reminiscent of the first seasons of the original Justified. A reviewer commented that this new release is too PC. Considering the overall sentiments of the entertainment industry, maybe so. However, the original seemed to be full of twangy voiced rednecks. The new release just changes to a new slice of the population. The new release returns to a focus on Raylan and his interactions with criminals, his friends, family and co-workers, and of course, his love life. I'm happy with my purchase of this dvd.

A crying shame
This is the slowest moving series with 1 mediocre bad guy and average city cop TV show cast. The boss is weak, fellow cops are weak. You can also predict the story line and when some decision or action makes no common sense you'll soon learn the reason was to setup future events. Cliche race cards and whiny Detroit drivel instead of the spectacular black characters like Limehouse in the first series. No huge cast of brilliant characters and dark humor. In fact his love connections make no sense and have no chemistry. The lack of gun fighting Raylan is noticeable and it almost makes his old character and mannerisms become boring and lame. In season 7 there was supposed to be a showdown. Well as usual this series leads you on and on with no real satisfaction except to hear what a bad deal certain people have in life. No need in bringing up a life of bad decisions. This show is like watching Mike Tyson start boxing again in his 60s. Once great is now second rate.

Two words: Buy it
To say City Primeval isn't quite as good as the other seasons of Justified is like saying some of Raymond Chandler's other novels weren't as good as The Long Goodbye -- it's great, just not quite as consistently great as its predecessors. To be fair, City Primeval has to shoehorn its story into barely more than half the episodes of a prior Justified season, and it shows -- Elmore Leonard's typically vivid characters are clipped and rushed, leaving no time for many of the quirky moments that made one storyline or another especially memorable -- but what Olyphant and Co. are allowed time to do, they do brilliantly. Clement Mansell ranks with the very best of Justified's impressive villains -- Boyd, Mags, Limehouse and Bobby Quarles -- and your only real complaint when it all ends will be that there wasn't more of it.

If you are a Justified fan, or even if you're not, give it a try
Well worth the wait and so good to see a few familiar characters. Without giving any spoilers, I loved the drama, tension (have to admit I almost had to watch a few scenes from behind my hands), and love love love the ending. Really hope they make Season 2. Plus, I didn't know until after I had watched the entire season that the girl who plays his daughter is his real life daughter; I had been impressed with her in that she played so well as a believable real-life kid, not a polished Hollywood glamor-type of tween. She was refreshing and believable.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, however I have to point out that it is a region 1 dvd and will not play here in the UK, unless like me, you have a multi region dvd player.
