I grabbed this SmallRig Hyper Chill cage kinda thinking it would be “nice to have” for filming, I do a lot of quick shoots on my phone and it usually heats up like crazy, especially when I’m outside or recording longer clips. With this thing on, my phone stayed cool the whole time. Like… actually cool, not “less hot but still sweaty.” The 15W cooler kicks in fast. First time I turned it on I thought it was broken cause it got cold so quick. I was like ok wow, this is doing something for real. I filmed a 20 min clip and normally my phone would be screaming at me with that “temperature too high” warning, but nope, nothing. Stayed smooth the whole time. The cage itself feels solid without being heavy. I’ve used some rigs before that feel like holding a brick, but this one is pretty comfy. My phone fit in easy (I got a Pixel and it still worked fine) and it didn’t wiggle around or feel like it was gonna fall out. The little power bank holder on the back is actually super handy. I didn’t think I’d use it but it kept everything in one place so I wasn’t juggling cables like a clown. The two in one USB C adapter is nice too cause I could power the cooler and still plug in my mic at the same time. No weird workarounds or extra dongles. I used it for a livestream test and the difference was kinda crazy. Usually after like 10 minutes my phone starts dropping frames or lagging cause it gets hot, but with this cage it stayed smooth the whole stream. Even the audio stayed clean cause the phone wasn’t throttling. The grip on the sides feels good too. Not slippery, not too chunky. I walked around with it for a bit and it didn’t feel awkward. Only thing I messed up was forgetting to tighten one of the knobs the first time, so the phone slid a tiny bit, but that was 100 percent my fault cause I was rushing. Once I tightened it right, it stayed locked in. Overall I’m pretty impressed. It keeps the phone cool, makes filming easier, and just feels like a legit upgrade to my setup. If you shoot video on your phone a lot, this thing is honestly worth it. I didn’t expect to like it this much but here we are.

I love this cage and the iPhone version too. I shoot with an iPhone 15 Pro Max. This is an incredible iPhone! I have had iPhones starting with version 3. Great cage, but consider getting the universal cage without magnetic mounts -- As I've built out my rig I'm finding myself wanting an attachment point on the back-side of the camera similar to the universal phone option -- Maybe there will be a V2 in the future where the phone bracket will incorporate either cold-shoe or 1/4" for additional accessories.

Finally a cage that won’t need to be replaced after you upgrade your MagSafe enabled phone. Solid construction and feels substantial. Lots of mounting options with numerous 1/4 inch mounts. Love that it comes with an adapter to also mount non MagSafe phones. A great starter kit if you wanna start filming with your phone.

I purchased this case to level up my mobile photography game. What I liked about this case was its design and construction. It is made out of metal (aluminum) and has many mounting options. You can either use your magsafe to connect your device or the supplied tension mount. All my filters fit perfectly using this, as well as my light. This holds my phone securely with out any worry of it falling out. Either by magsafe or tension mount. What I like most about this type of cage is that I will not have to upgrade to a different one to fit another phone.

This is the best and easiest way to have a phone in a rig for lights and mics. Plenty of options.

Esto es una opinión honesta y basada en mi experiencia. Las fotos, datos y descripción del anunciante son fieles a la realidad. Este kit de SmallRig me parece de lo más inteligente que han hecho últimamente. Llevaba un tiempo buscando una solución real para poder grabar con el móvil sin tener que estar pendiente de si se calienta, si tengo batería suficiente, si me da estabilidad o si puedo conectarle lo que necesito. Y con esto lo han resuelto prácticamente todo. Desde el punto de vista profesional, que es desde donde hablo porque me dedico a esto, es un sistema que convierte el teléfono en una herramienta de grabación perfectamente funcional para situaciones exigentes. No estamos hablando de un soporte con forma de jaula para poner el móvil y ya está, sino de una estructura pensada de verdad para trabajar. La construcción está muy cuidada, con un cuerpo robusto pero ligero que aguanta bien, se agarra mejor todavía y permite trabajar sin estar pendiente de que se te vaya de las manos o se deslice en mitad de una toma. La pinza sujeta el móvil con seguridad, aunque aquí sí tengo un pequeño matiz: si usas un iPhone Pro Max con funda, probablemente tengas que quitarla para que encaje bien. En mi caso no entra con la funda puesta, la pinza va demasiado justa. En mi caso ahora tengo el Iphone 17 Pro Max, pero hasta hace poco tenía el 13 Pro Max y me pasaba lo mismo, puesto que son tamaños similares. Sé que SmallRig tiene fundas dedicadas a cada modelo con la posibilidad de ponerle empuñaduras y demás. Pero es otro concepto. Y es que dicho este detalle de la funda, la intención de este modelo es refrigerar el smartphone (luego lo explico mejor) y obviamente con la funda puesta no sería posible. Sin embargo en ocasiones en las que sabes que no necesitas dicha refrigeración, hubiera estado bien ese margen para poner y quitar con rapidez el móvil sin necesidad de quitarle la funda. Y como explicaba, yendo más a este detalle, lo más importante y por lo que para mí este sistema tiene sentido es por el sistema de refrigeración activa. Funciona, y lo hace muy bien. Tiene tres niveles de potencia y es capaz de mantener el teléfono en una temperatura estable incluso grabando en 4K durante más de 40 minutos. Y es que realmente enfría. Si has grabado en exteriores o en sesiones largas, sabes perfectamente lo que supone que se corte una grabación por sobrecalentamiento. Esto lo elimina. El ventilador no es completamente silencioso, pero no es molesto. Hay que tener cuidado si grabas con micros omnidireccionales o muy cerca del conjunto, porque puede colarse el ruido, pero si usas micrófonos inalámbricos o bien orientados no deberías tener problema. Sí necesita alimentación externa para funcionar y eso hay que tenerlo en cuenta. El hub USB-C 4 en 1 que incluye permite conectar simultáneamente el móvil, un SSD, un micro y controlar el audio, pero no es perfecto. Si conectas todo a la misma batería puedes tener inestabilidad, sobre todo si estás tirando a la vez del ventilador y del SSD. Lo que hago es alimentar el ventilador por separado si sé que voy a grabar sesiones largas. Para alguien que se dedica al vídeo esto es más una cuestión de gestión del setup que un problema. Lo bueno es que puedes ponerle tu propio hub si te convence más otro. La base es lo suficientemente flexible para montarte el sistema como quieras. El agarre es excelente. Las empuñaduras laterales permiten grabar de manera muy estable, incluso en movimiento. Una de ellas tiene disparador bluetooth, lo que facilita mucho la operativa si estás grabando solo. Todo se siente sólido y bien resuelto. El diseño incluye muchas roscas y zapatas para montar micro, luz, monitor, lo que necesites, sin inventos raros. Aparte, se agradece que venga con una funda con compartimentos bien pensados para llevarlo todo recogido y no tener que estar buscando piezas sueltas. He probado bastantes cosas de SmallRig y en general me gusta cómo piensan sus accesorios, pero este me ha sorprendido especialmente por el enfoque tan claro al creador que graba en serio con el móvil. Y digo en serio porque si solo haces stories o vídeos rápidos no necesitas esto. Pero si haces entrevistas, directos, reportajes o cualquier cosa que requiera fiabilidad, calidad de imagen y control, sí. Muy contento. Lo recomendaría sin dudarlo a cualquiera que esté usando el móvil como cámara principal o secundaria para grabación profesional o semiprofesional.
