Concise and informative
A concise but highly informative guide, which highlights the differences between short stories and novels (and it's not just the length!) If you're a writer moving from one form to the other, this book will help you be aware of the varying requirements of each form.

Read it!
Straightforward advice. She uses words economically and can say in paragraphs what other 'how-to' authors take chapters to say, if they say such sensible things as all.

A welcome bridge from short story to novels
I am primarily a novelist that also writes short stories. This book for me works both ways. If you are a short story writer who is taking the plunge into novel writing then it illustrates by example the different approaches required for each. If you are a novel writer having a breather to go back to writing some short stories (as I do) then it works equally as well. For me it is a book I can dip in and out of. In particular I found the following passages useful: patterns of speech, making distinct dialogue, not answering questions too quickly, knowing your characters and seeing the setting through your character's eyes. The editing and revision section was also very helpful. This is a useful, concise aid to any budding novelist and short story writer. Well worth a read.
