Excellent 2007 two CD anthology from the critically-acclaimed UK outfit led by singer/songwriter Paddy McAloon. Although not a prolific band, Prefab Sprout's string of '80s and '90s albums remain sharp and intelligent slices of British Pop/Rock that continue to enthrall new and old fans. Although most tracks on this CD were pulled from their Sony albums, there are a few rare B-sides previously unavailable on CD that make this a worthwhile purchase for the novice and the fanatic. 37 tracks including 'The King of Rock 'N' Roll', 'When Love Breaks Down', 'Cruel', 'Appetite', 'Bonny', 'Electric Guitars' and many more. Give me something I have not heard before.
Let me start out by saying I've been a fan of the Sprouts since hearing appetite back in early 1985 and let me tell you boy I was instantly taken away by the songs simple beauty. The album, "two wheels good" (renamed in America) was just as awe inspiring. When I found out that it was actually the bands second effort I quickly ran to the local import record shop and picked up a copy of their fist album, "Swoon". I was sold all over again. Soon after that came, "Protest Songs", "Langley Park", "Jordan", "Andromeda" soon after followed the, "best of package" titled, "The Collection" (renamed in America) which gave us a listen to several tracks remastered for the first time. Soon after that, "Gunmen and other stories" my favorite was released. Now we have, "The Kings of Rock-N-Roll" which in it's own right is fine representation of some Sprout music, but it is basically a regurgitated version of, "The Collection." The person who wrote the review for this album goes on to mention that there are a, "few" hard to find b-sides on this package. Well let's see, "Nero The Zero" has essentially been released on just about every other CD single that has been released in the last 10 years. "He'll Have To Go" as well as, "The Yearning Loins" were released on, "Two Wheels Good." Now Donna Summer on the other I have not seen on CD form anywhere. So maybe we should thank the record company for this one track, I think. Come on man where are the early singles, extended versions and b-sides? Give me something I haven't seen or heard before. For example; Radio Love, Cherry Tree, Constant Blue, The Devil Has All The Best Tunes, Walk On, The Glass Slipper, Spinning Belinda, Silhouettes, Heaven Can Wait, Oh The Swiss! , Real Life (Just Around the Corner), Wigs, The Guest Who Stayed Forever, Old Spoonface is Back, Rebel Land, Vendetta, Dandy of the Danube, Tin Can Pot (This one rocks), Tornado, Bearpark, Just Because I Can, Dragons, The End of the Affair, Girl I'm Here and Never Trust a Spell. If you (record company) release a package that includes the early singles, extended versions and b-sides I would be all over it as well as buy one copy for each of my family members and friends.

Making Every Word Count
The mid to late 80's saw a resurgence in critically powerful lyric writing. While folks like Mark Knopfler, Roddy Frame (Aztec camera) and Morrissey may have been at the forefront, Paddy McAloon and his band, PreFab Sprout may have been the best of the poignant bands to emerge from that period. They have two albums that stay high on my desert island list, "Steve McQueen (Two Wheels Good)" and "Jordan The Comeback," and this 37(!!!) song double disc is a testament to just how stunning the Fab's collective output remains. The band did two important things in their career; McAllon wrote like a folk singer but stayed with a modern sound, and Thomas Dolby produced these albums with an electronic lushness that would have beautified even a Joni Mitchel album. McAloon has a romantic's eye for images and tragedy, best exemplified in songs like "We Let The Stars Go Free" (which can still bring a tear to my eye) and "When Love Breaks Down." He also had an uncanny knack to look inside the human condition (the cheater's explanation "Horsin' Around") or "I Remember That." In the song "Carnival 2000," he may have set to music the finest prayer for mankind ever sung:"We ask that any wrong we've done, the years ahead forgive us.We ask for any good we've done, that all of it outlive us."The collection spans Prefab Sprout's output from "Swoon" to "Andromeda Heights" in 1997, and leaves of some crucial early sings and a couple of post-Sony albums. But really, you can't go wrong with this collection other than buying the individual albums.
