Murder On The Orient Express [DVD] [2017]

We enjoyed watching it at Christmas.
(Spoilers) Reading some of the less favourable reviews makes me wonder what these people actually watch that is so infinitely superior to this film. I think Kenneth Branagh makes a good attempt at an alternative Poiret, and I speak as someone that has seen David Suchet's excellent series of the whole cannon so many times I can virtually join in with every line of dialogue. That said, Johhny Depp is hideously miscast. The film/books most famous line is "Because I do not like your face", said by Poirot to Mr Depp. I reckon, even after recent difficulties, I'd be hard pushed to find a woman of any age or sexual orientation that doesn't like his face. And although though won't admit it, given the chance of swapping faces, most men would in a heartbeat if they thought they could get away with it. He has a really tough job looking obnoxious. Johnny Depp - child kidnapper/murderer? Nope - it's just not plausible. He's also failed by the script which does him no favours in trying to establish Evil Johnny. The best he gets is to look a bit rude, and that really won't do. It's almost as if he's taken the part on the basis he doesn't have to behave as the vile repellent animal Christie describes in the book. She actually portrays this very economically, but you are left in no doubt he's an extremely unpleasant person, rather than someone who has temporarily forgotten Ms Manners.By the way, the cinematography is outstanding, generally, but there are a few times when an obviously model train is travelling through an obviously model landscape, a drop in production values that would never have occurred on the ITV series. It's a technique that can't be avoided for at least one set-piece, but other than that it looks wrong and seems unnecessary.Perhaps the most annoying part of the film comes at the very end when Mr Brannagh can't resist using an opportunity to signpost his next film, presumably Death on the Nile. The thing is, he's deliberately hijacking the line for his own purposes. When Poirot rocks up on the Nile, he's gone on holiday. Which makes Brannagh look quite ruthlessly mercenary. That aside, I'd be happy to see Brannagh in a new version of that film, perhaps the best story of them all. But if he has intentions of "Doing a Suchet" and knocking them off one by one, forget it.There was one big surprise. None of my family worked out who had killed the victim until it's obvious when Poirot explains. I thought all seven billion people on the planet had this one thing in common - they know the plot.

Quite good movie, happy with the product
The media could not be loaded. [SPOILER-FREE REVIEW]I have bought this Blu-Ray due to an upcoming release of the Haunting in Venice, which I'm quite excited about. Initially I didn't think I'll be enjoying the movie much, as (just like many other people) I knew the book and the ending to the Murder on the Orient Express. However, I was pleasently surprised. Even though I knew how the movies's about to end there were many other things the film had to offer. To start with, presentation of clues and hints was made pretty well. I predict that for someone who doesn't know the plot, there is no way of guessing the ending and it can be definitely surprising. The movie was also really beautiful, it had many interesting locations around the world that were just a pleasure to see, especially in 4k. The movie was also packed with stars and they definitely didn't disappoint. I quite enjoyed the new version of Hercule Poirot, even though it was significantly different from this character's portrayals in the past. The 4k Blu-Ray edition also surprised me with available languages for both audio and subtitles. It didn't mention, neither on the box nor on Amazon page, that it has so many languages available - it only listed English. For audio the available languages are: English, English (descriptive), Spanish, French, Castilian, German, Italian, Czech, Polish & commentary by the director. For subtitles the available languages are: English, Spanish, French, Castilian, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, German, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Chinese, Czech, Polish and commentaries in different languages.

Murder on the Orient Express - Blu-ray
Like a few films I’d rate, I would go more like a 3.5/5 than a full 4, but I usually round up.I actually quite enjoyed this new version. But then I’m also not the biggest fan of the 1974 adaption as I’m more a ‘Death on the Nile’ fan personally. This new version does have some lavish and beautiful production design bringing the splendour of the Orient Express train to life and some good visual effects generally. The core story remains the same, as a group of travellers on the Express become stranded, a murder takes place and, since the murderer must be one of the people on the train, Belgian detective Hercule Poirot must deduce the truth as everyone has something to hide. The cast is good, although some faces get more screen time than others along the way, despite a starry set of names and faces. It’s always good to see Michelle Pfeiffer again and I thought Kenneth Branagh was adequate as Poirot but pulling double duty here as director as well. Obviously, if you have seen one of the other versions etc you’ll have an idea how the story ends but, in a time when a whodunnit on the big screen is a rare thing, it’s nonetheless fun to see an old story be given a new sheen. And while it’s not going to be regarded as a definitive version of the book, if it’s box office success at all helps to get more whodunnits made (beyond the planned remake of ‘Death on the Nile’) then I’m happy with it’s existence.Extras are fine, a group of featurettes running about 1hr 45m covering things like production, casting, scoring and a featurettes giving a little bit of information about Agatha Christie herself, alongside deleted scenes and a commentary by Branagh and writer Michael Green. The latter isn’t too bad as commentaries go, and yes, things like the moustache are covered alongside little deviations here and there from the source. Not a bad selection.

Demo worthy 4K movie
I bought this 4K movie because it was on a list of the most demo worthy 4K movies. And in that regard the picture quality is just breathtaking. It was shot digitally with 6.5K cameras and it certainly shows. Wow, just, WOW. As for the plot of the movie itself, I enjoyed it, although I believe many people will find it kind of absurd/campy. I still enjoyed it and would watch it again. Btw, there is a disclaimer on the Amazon description page indicating that this disc would not play in North America. It worked just fine for me and I am using a regular old Sony UBPX800M2 4K UHD Blu Ray player. I gave this movie 4 stars instead of 5 only because of the campy thing, but I do highly recommend it.

A prescient and fun mystery in 4K
Great cast. Beautifully filmed and a great 4K transfer. I live these films. Very old school and fun. Best so far is Murder in Venice in my opinion.Amazingly filmed before everyone wanted to stab Mr.Depp.
