There are lots of different names for leather, some are misleading, and abundant misuse because people do not understand the differences. Cowhides have two main layers, the corium and the grain. Collagen is the main structural protein in animals and mostly found in tendons, ligaments, and skin. Collagen fibers are thinner and more flexible in the corium, tightening up and hardening as you move up towards the grain, which is the outer most layer. There are four different types of leather. Full Grain Leather Full grain is the best quality and will last the longest. This layer can have scars or other imperfections but is the most expensive. Top Grain If a thin layer has been removed or if the leather has been corrected in some way it is called top grain. This is the second best type of leather. It is not as strong but it still contains some of the grain which gives it strength and it is still stronger than split or bonded leather. Split Leather Suede falls into this category, however a more common type of split leather is genuine leather. Genuine leather is made up of layers of low quality leather glued together. It doesn't contain any of the grain, and has been heavily processed. Better than bonded leather, but will not last. Bonded Leather Bonded leather is made from taking all the shavings and scraps from making the first 3 types of leathers and gluing them back together. The finished product is a mixture of leather, plastic, and glue made to look like leather. This is shorter than most dog leashes, but perfect for walking in crowded areas or when you want to stay in control. It is made from a single piece of full grain leather. If taken care of, it will last a long time.
