Review of 4k transfer only.
If you are reading this, presumably you know what you think of the film - I think it's an unknown gem.Having only seen it on DVD before (which is a pretty poor transfer even allowing for the format) I didn't know what to expect - but this has been on my list of things I'd been hoping would get a better format release for ages.Transfer is great, and it's scarcely dearer than the blu ray (which is also included). If you love the film, you'll be seeing it in a whole new light. Thanks, Criterion.

Almost forgotten
Not so simple narrative, good actors, lacking in depth, but you won't regret time spent watching this movie

One of the greatest ...
One of the greatest movies ever ... beyond words.Only sorry that Reviewer Scribble gave the film just three stars because of a bit of hiss on his/her soundbar. As for A N Wilson's one star rating, obviously he/she believes that old age alone makes for a great film critic. Pity he/she didn't take the trouble to spell Matthew McConaughey's name correctly.

Not bad, but a great 4K remaster?
I hadn’t seen the film for years, and the new Criterion release seemed worthy of another look. Recent reviews have pointed out how, almost thirty years on, the subject matter is still ever more relevant. It won’t be for everybody, since it’s more understated, than a thriller (like No Country For Old Men). The picture is ok, but I didn’t think the sound was all that great - played through a soundbar, there was quite a bit of hiss in some scenes. In retrospect, I think I would’ve been better served had I rented the film online, in HD.

LONE STAR BLURAY from Criterion.
Please try to understand my 2 star review. I think I may not be very lucid. I am not a fan of Sayles but I admire him as a maverick, independant, "go my own way" director and writer. I also have always thought Criterion release some very good films, many not major League. I HATED this film!!! Written in the most confusing way possible with multiple storylines and characters, and flash backs that take a moment to register. Then there is the acting. Cooper gives a very one note performence. The rest of the cast don't seem to know or care where they are. The only actor who works for me (and he always does) is Kristofferson as the brutal racist sheriff. I know full well that many readers of this will think - what an ignoramus! - Well think that if you will - but I'm Not! 60 plus years of cinema going gives me the right to be critical and say so. The Criterion release is very good. Correct ratio, good picture, sound and subtitles with loads of extras and a booklet. Many readers of Sight and Sound and Cahiers du cinema will thoroughly enjoy ths long meandering film. Maybe you will too. Remember - Just my opinion! The quality of the release is good and if you are a fan of the actors and Sayles - give it a go? (P.S.) Mathew McGonahay is there and he isn't bad.
