Can you use the fireplace without the heat?

Yes! I do it all the time. From the remote you can turn the fireplace on or off. You can also turn the heat on and off from a different button on the remote. If you want to adjust heat up or down, you have to do that from the side of the fireplace. Definitely can use it without the heat.

Can I replace the bulbs?

No, my light bulb went out, I contacted the company and they are sending me a whole new fireplace insert, but I had to send pictures of the cut cord and with a black marker and write void/scrap on the serial number.
