Great book if starting to learn CBT
Had been assigned this for a social work grad class. I read it from front to back because it was so easy to read and understand. No big jargon or full of theory. Strategies and worksheets included can be used easily with clients. Great basic CBT book to start. Geared for Adult clients. Wish the author would do one for children too.

An improvement on the already great 1st edition. Love the improved videos, too.
A great book that provides clear textual explanation of key concepts, gives good examples, and then gives great short videos to go with the text. This is an improvement on an already excellent 1st edition that has been used well in graduate school classes.

Practical, well-written, and wonderfully organised
In a clear writing style that is enjoyable to read, Wright has organised the key strategies of CBT and desribed exactly how to perform them in therapy. The book covers practical advice on how to organise elements of the assessment so that information gleaned falls naturally towards a treatment strategy. The book excels in placing all the mainstream interventions of CBT into a cohesive structure. For example, when working with automatic thoughts, the author describes 6 strategies that can be used to identify them. When describing one such strategy, imagery, the author breaks this down into 6 practical ideas for implementation. Therapeutic strategies are covered in many chapters. The chapters on working with automatic thoughts informs the reader on how to implement Socratic questioning, work with the client on constructing thought-change records and reattributing cause for events. Chapters on behavioral interventions describe how to select and schedule behavioral exercises, overcome potential obstacles, conduct exposure in a way manageable for the patient and monitor progress. This by no means touches on a third of what the book will teach. Wright also introduces the concept of schemas and how to modify strategies when working with more severe symptoms. In the tone of a helpful mentor, the author advises the reader to explore specialist texts on such topics but introduces them for sake of completeness. This is a succinct and practical summary, very well organised, written in a manner that teaches and for me at least, stimulated a lot of additional ideas.

Buy it used; you can create your own video DVD
Although the video DVD lessons still did not come with a new book, I found website information on page xiv that led me to links for each video. Since I will not always have internet for the class, I still needed a DVD for my computer. So I had to open each link, copy it, then burn my own DVD. I might as well have purchased the book used, since the new one also did not come with the DVD. Note this work-around will only work if (1) you can Burn DVD on your computer, or (2) if you always have internet access to view the videos.

This is such a good book, it's relieving
I have a bachelors in psychology and am preparing for my masters. With that in mind, I am really enjoying Learning Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (LCBT). After watching 2 other highly rated dvd's on CBT, I can say that this one is the most lucid, to-the-point and pragmatic of all the dvd's I've watched. Further, the audio is good! I know, I shouldn't have to say that, but unfortunately, some of the other dvd's I've watched had such horrible audio, you couldn't even make out the majority of what they were saying. Moreover, I just finished reading chapter 1. Again, smart, authoritative (sited references)and succinct! Why does it make me think: "this is how books are SUPPOSED to be!?" with such a sense of surprise? This really is an exceptional book. The funniest part is, I read another review that said: "this is not a self-help book". The irony to me, is that this book is more helpful for me as an individual with my life issues (aside from education), than any of the self-help books I've read; (granted, I'm not too fond of self-help books anyway). Of course, a book can never replace a good trained professional Psychologist; but if you want to become a great-trained-professional-Psychologist, this book is for you! You won't regret it.(To learn additional techniques beyond the fundamentals in this, pick up Cognitive Therapy Techniques by Leahy.)

An Excellent Resource for Learning Cognitive Therapy
It has often been said that psychotherapy is both art and science. Research over the last 40 years has demonstrated the scientific basis for Cognitive Therapy. However, it is one thing to read about an approach to therapy and another to learn how to do it. Learning Cognitive-Behavior Therapy: An Illustrated Guide provides the reader and clinician with the best of both worlds. Not only will the reader find in the book the basic concepts and techniques of CT, the accompanying DVD will demonstrate how to administer these interventions. This book is a must for anyone who is serious about using Cognitive Therapy in their clinical setting. It is also a useful resource for academics that are looking for a resource to illustrate this approach to therapy.

A practical, schematic and concise CBT compendium that every CBT practitioner should read.
This book explains the core CBT principles and techniques and helps you to develop them following real-life examples. Every chapter provides detailed explanations on how to use CBT techniques and their rationale. There are some useful examples and the vignettes included in the DVD are very clear and helpful. I have been practicing CBT for some years and I have never found a book so schematic and practical. I think that every CBT trainee should read it at some point.

Great book
I really like this book. After buying a selection of books for my post graduate diploma, this is the book that I found easiest to read and the most informative. The language is simple and clear and the content is very practical. The DVD was a use addition.

Pretty good
Videos asociated with the book are a bit cheesy and some theory is explained in a complicated way. Other than that the book is pretty good!
