Light the charcoal with a lighter and place on its side, concave side uppermost. When the disk is ash-white all over, add just a pinch of incense - et voilà! It's tempting to load up a charcoal disc with too much incense, but this will only slow down burning and may even stop the process. Maximum exposure to oxygen is important.
