Records and transcribes answering machine messages too!
I have worked in telecommunications for over 40 years, so I know a bit about phones. I did not have too high of expectations of this device when I purchased it for my mom, however, this piece of equipment really impressed me.The set up was quite simple for anyone who has ever connected something to a wired or wireless network. On bootup, the large color touchscreen directs you through a simple set up wizard and we had the thing up and running in a few minutes. It was a bit cumbersome using the somewhat sluggish built in touchscreen keyboard to do the online registration, but we only had to deal with that the one time. The transcription works quite well, and the amplification on the handset can be set crazy high. The most surprising delight was when I discovered that this phone has a built-in answering machine. Not only was my mom able to retire her old answering machine, which she was unable to hear very well, but at the press of a button this amazing phone will transcribe the recorded message as well! It also very clearly displays all of the information about the call with the time date, caller ID caller name displayed clearly on the large color display.I did have to go into the settings and enable the phone to remember it’s last volume settings so that she did not have to continue raising the volume for every call. All in all, it’s probably the best $75 dollars I’ve ever spent.

A Real Need For The Hearing Impaired:
I purchased 2 CapTel telephones from Amazon, they are caption corded phones.A land line phone and fast Internet connection are required. It can either work with Ethernet or WI-FI, the phone uses the Internet connection to complete the communication and conversion from voice to text for the captioning. It works very well without any added services from the phone service, it uses the phone line and your old telephone number plus the Internet to set it all in motion. Once you get it set up and registered with the FCC, the service is activated and provided to us the hard of hearing, 24/7 by our US Government thru the use of the Internet. FCC registration is done on the phone touch screen after your WI-FI or Ethernet Internet connection has been established. Fine tuning can be done in the settings mode.I am 86 years old, all of todays new technology is nothing short of amazing.

Me and My Aunt can finally have a conversation
This mobile device is exceptional, precisely what my Aunt, who suffers from significant hearing impairment, required. The setup was swift and straightforward. I appreciate the inclusion of all necessary components, including ethernet and telephone cable, which simplifies the process. By simply registering the information and establishing Wi-Fi connectivity, she is now able to engage in conversations that were previously unattainable. This is a substantial improvement in her communication capabilities.

Cannot get to work but the phone assembly is nice and what I wanted - also - not sure how much of the problem is with XFINITY/Comcast whose internet and phone service i have. But at age 80 I am exhausted trying to call them then when you get an answer the menus are useless to the problem so I sit here looking at a dead phone and getting no where and it is impossible to find a human to help although the agents in the Philippines are very nice and do things but in reality nothing happens back here at Lake Frederick - this is so frustrating and now painful to this disabled Marine who has reached his limit and throwing money at XFINITY is such a waste I am sick of it.

troublesome wifi connection
Bought this phone for my elderly mother. She has two hearing aids and it had gotten to the point I quit trying to talk to her on the phone because she could not hear. The basic phone is very nice. Was surprised to know that the captioning is actually done by a human. Shows I didn't do my research. The captioning response is a little slow, but once you get used to it very usable and the phone shows promise of really being a game changer. The phone is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi, but phone calls are over a phone cable to cable modem. My concern is its Wi-Fi connection. Last time my parents tried to use the phone it came back with a 'captioning turned off, press caption button to restart' type message. The caption button would not respond. Could not figure out with the manual what was wrong so called customer service. Our router is maybe 25-30' from this phone. Was told by customer service that is outside their recommended range for Wi-Fi to this phone. They recommend an ethernet connection (their home is not wired ethernet). She suggested I restart the phone. I did that and then went through the approximately five screens you have to go through every time the phone powers up and sure enough close captioning is back. As long as this does not happen often, we will keep the phone. Otherwise will return it.I would suggest not buying this device unless it will be on an ethernet connection.

Money Well Spent
Lately, mom's been having more frustration hearing me on the phone. I thought something was wrong with her phone, but no. And her hearing aids were checked. And accents had always challenged her in phone messages.CapTel to the rescue. After reading stories of so many folks in my shoes, we thought it was time to try captions. Great instruction book that even she can understand. Quick set up. Put in all her contacts and she began practicing making and receiving calls. She is comfortable now and really likes not having to ask to, "please repeat that." She has a landline jack and ethernet we could connect to. The only negative is she has a new location to answer the phone, in her den, not the kitchen bar. But she is ok with that. As an active 95 yr old, she is happy to leave phone frustration behind. My husband has hearing loss and even with his aids, he struggles sometimes with phones. He wants this at our house, but at this time, I am delaying. We would have to get phone service and wire the house. Have to check into that. But I see it in the future. Great product, don't hesitate!
